Sales Tax on domains now?????

WTH, I have noticed that the last couple times I bought or renewed a domain, I have a tax in the total. I assume it is sales tax. I just had one in my cart and with a $8.99 cost, there was $0.69 tax, and although I have not done the calculation, our sales tax is a bit over 8%, so it looks like that is what it is.

When the hell did that start? Has anyone else had this experience? Or is this just the State of Washington pulling this trick? Or did Godaddy move to Washington as my information tells me that unless you have a physical presence in the State, you do not collect the sales tax.

You just can't keep these *******s out of your pocket any more. There was a time when home of the brave, land of the free meant something. But that was back in my childhood I think, not since.

    Tim,

Typically sales tax is a local option. Some states have chosen to tax Internet sales, others have not. So far at least, the feds have declined to make this a nationwide mandate but there is growing pressure from brick and mortar retail businesses to force online businesses to collect and pay tax to the states.
