Hi everyone,

I'd like to put pictures into the articles I write. I find it pretty hard to find nice pictures with a free to use license. How do you go about this?

Cheers,
Tijs

      What Steve said ^^^.

If you use the advanced search function to do three searches of the Main Marketing Forum only, looking respectively for threads with the words "Images", "Photos" and "Pictures" in their titles, I think you'll quickly find almost endless resources answering your exact question.

I'm pretty sure using google images for pictures and just throwing them on your blog is totally against copyright.

I use man cray. They have embed with re size. Pinterest use to be super. However, they went ahead and got rid of the re size option so it is rare we use em any more.

Why do so many people imagine this is a safe, legal, ethical, moral or sensible thing to do?!

I do a weekly newsletter and need little images for the articles and what I usually do is just use Google advanced search, down near the bottom you can filter searches by license restrictions, so choose 'free to use and share' and then you should be given only results that are not restricted by a license. Wikipedia is also good for this sometimes as they'll feature images that are free of any copyright.

We also buy big libraries of stock images from Digital Juice, so I use a lot of those whenever possible. The Digital Juice stuff is very nice, lots of composited arty stuff, it just depends on the kinds of things you need.

I can't believe that there are people here giving you advice just to steal images from a Google search!

(I don't include djtrillian's advice in this. He / She is obviously using Google's images in the right way by searching for images which have specific licence terms and conditions)

Do not just use Google images striaght from a search. Most images are copyright and you cannot just use them as you like. You could be served up with a heavy lawyers letter!!! or worse.

Go to flickr on the link below and you can search for images under the creative commons licence. Generally this will let you share the image royalty free. Please check out the licence terms for any image you want to use. Generally, most creative commons images can be used for non commercial purposes freely so long as you comply with the licence terms.

You can also use the link facility in flickr for displaying the image on your blog. This cuts out all the copying and uploading of images.

Cameras are great for producing free images. It's not hard to take decent pictures with a camera phone or an automatic point and shoot camera.

I like articles that have images. When reading a dull article, an image could be quite relieving. But, the pictures you get from a Google search :

    - generally require a license
    - the ones that are free are generally full of cliches, lacking originality.

I would recommend you to make your own pictures. Would that take too much time?

You can do a google search and go to advance search options and adjust the google search results to only return free to use images.

If you steal images, here's what may happen to you...

I know an ophthalmologist who hired a guy to create his web site. A short time later, he was sued. The web designer used a stolen image on the doctor's new site.

To settle the infringement case, the doctor had to pay $3,200. (And, let me tell you, he wasn't too happy about it!)

They get their information from the night school version of the Urban Myth School of Internet Marketing. Specifically from a course called "Copyright Violation 101 - It's Easier to Ask Forgiveness Than Permission"...
