eLance job taking forever. Should I cancel?

I hired a freelancer via elance and the website project that i awarded him is now almost 30 days overdue. He is also not prompt with his replies and i figure he has other jobs.

When I told him i was going to cancel the project my site "was mysteriously hacked"

I am worried if i cancel the project, he would find a way to hack the website and mess things up. The project has dragged on forever.

Should I cancel the project? I've never had a good experience via elance, but i have already spent $4k on various projects.

      If he does significant work through elance - you'd be better off to file your concerns/complaint with elance and let them mediate. This is especially true if the payment is in their escrow system.

      I also advise using the message system on the elance site when it comes to discussing deadlines, delays, requirements, etc. It's an added protection for both buyer and provider.

    30 days? wow. Did you have a time agreement of how long it would take to do what you asked? That sounds like too long, especially without communications (except for threats.)

    If the website is crucial to you, get the code base analysed before you file a complaint. In the worst case scenario, you are not getting your money back and hence, it's better to make sure what you have works and can be built upon.

    If you want, I can help you in finding hacky spots.
