Domain Name Too Long? Does it Matter?

Hello,

I just created my health and fitness company but because of my domain name, it has a very long domain name, so my question is if it matters or if is is ok?

My URL is:

Be Awesome Health & Fitness so my domain is beawesomehealthandfitness.com which is obviously quite long so was wondering if i should change it to something shorter if it matters?

Thank you for any feedback on this as i really like the name but im not sure on the lenght of it.

I could try Wellness or Wellbeing instead of healthandfitness but not sure it makes it better.

I know i could use my name but im trying to create something that maybe on the future i will have franchisers so would like to have a company name.

Thank you,
Nuno da Silva

It is indeed too long, but that niche is so saturated and cutthroat that changing the domain may be like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Here is my two cents. I have a number of domains with long names and they are doing just fine in saturated niches.
People don't type domains in very much anymore they just put in a few characters and Bam, there you are. Yes you do have to have a website that ranks but on the other hand, If you can't rank a website to begin with then who really cares about the name?
      Thanks for your time.

Use a shorter domain name. Even with a long domain, you'd still have to do all this content and SEO work and that work is gonna make the difference.

Thanks everyone, yeah i thought it was too long but as dudelive said domain names aren't as important as they were before and i really like the name Be Awesome so just trying to find alternatives that can work.
Thank you and if anyone else has any feedback i would appreciate.

I would shoot for a name change. It is very long like you mentioned and then you will have your slug be long at times as well so it could be like beawesomehealthandfitness.com/howtolose10pounds or whatever it is.

You want to choose something that will look good and simple if you were to post on social media or on any other blog. You could use URL shorteners but it is also nice to show off your brand name in the url when you post in these places.

Also, if you're using that as your name you'd have a super long twitter handle, FB URL, etc.

    Hopefully this helps

Yeah I understand, unfortunately all the Be Awesome.com or co.uk are taken.
I did buy other domains like: beawesomerevolution.com, beawesomesystem.com so maybe one of those but they don't really show that I'm a health and fitness company though I guess that's something that happens with other companies as for example virgin active.

BeAwesomeSystem.com is (waaaay better) out of the domains you have.

    Much easier to remember.

Much easier to read when the Destination URL is visible in paid ads.

Much easier to spread the word.

If you've done keyword research and this fits a long-tail keyword string, keep it. If you need something shorter for offline use, you can register something shorter and redirect it.

    Question for you...

How do you plan on marketing?

If it's primarily online, then not a biggie, aside from you having to type it in every freaking time you do a post etc... :-)

If you are marketing offline via networking or flyers or anything where people will have to type something in, then shorten it up..

    Try acronyms like,
    BAHealthnFitness
    BAHFitness
    etc...

It depends on your goal. If you are making to make an impact, a shorter domain name would be better as a brand and will be easier to remember. As for SEO, I would say at this point that the domain name doesn't play as much importance as it once did.

Right, I don't think emd's matter so much from an sep standpoint anymore. Shorten it up if anything applicable comes along.

Yes, a long domain name is not so cool. Hard to remember and people can type in wrongly too.

Always try to get a shorter one. Follow Yahoo or Google or Bing - five letters max or something easy to remember

If anyone wants to gamble, we'll bet on the importance of an exact keyword matched domain. We'll take an exact keyword match, good content and no backlinks, to the first Google serp.

Is it impossible to rank well without the exact keyword matched domain? No, but it's a lot more work. You can read what you want, but the domain name is still one of the most important aspects of SEO.

Thanks guys, you have been really helpful though i have more questions than answers now ah ha ha

Final choices for me now are:

Be Awesome Revolution (same as the title of my book)
Be Awesome Health & Fitness (original one)
Be Awesome Wellness (though not sure it sounds ok when spoken)

    Any thoughts on those?

Thank you, you have been really helpful as i need to nail this down and get the best name i can.

    Thank you,
    Nuno

I would recommend not to use domain name that is 15 or more letters longer. Optimal is 14 or less. No numbers also.

Thanks everyone, after discussing with a lot of people as well as seeing and knowing what my business is about, the name Be Awesome Revolution seems to fit like a glove and it goes hand in hand with all the other Be Awesome Business i want to create as i created my Be Awesome Foundation already to help others, Be Awesome Revolution Book, etc...

The first thing I learnt about domain names was that they should be short and memorable, so I strongly advise that you find something else.

As the company groes you might find some issues in setting up a mail system. Why don;t you try an acronym like bah&f.com

    Hi Nuno Silva,
Of, course, if you look up at Google Panda or the latest algorythm of Google, it is very important about the Domain Name Too Long

Hi thank you for your reply but no, the whole idea is to brand the company and me of course as the main man but ultimately i want the brand to be separate completely from me hence my business name and i like the name of course of Be Awesome.

A Moz ranking study indicated long names do not rank as well.

It is too long for anyone to type.

It is too long and vague for anyone to remember, with too many words that can be switched or forgotten.

It is too long for a domain name. It's also hard to read the continuous words. You should find a shorter one if you want to promote it successfully.

Yes, it's a little too long, but this isn't your major problem. I think the niche is, as a matter of fact. Try to get some organic back-links to improve your rank.

As far as long domains go, at least yours is easy to remember and spell. If you can get a shorter one great but I dont think I would dwell on it too much.

I think it's fine to have a long name. People can bookmark it or pin it or what have you and get there easily. I also think that another idea can be to purchase a shorter domain and have it also point to the same site. This way you keep both domains and they both point to the same place.

If you want returning visitors, then a shorter name would be better because it is easier to remember and easier to type. For seo, domain name length probably wouldn't matter too much. But since the shorter domain name has more benefits, might as well use the shorter one.
