^^^This. Only I'd reverse the positions. I know a couple of people (different states) that run computer repair/used computers for sale businesses and use ONLY Craig's List. They have more business than they can handle.

Same in my location. The shop where I bought my last laptop - very old school because I like XP and its hard to find these days advertises only on Craigslist. his ads look like they were written by nerds - not marketers and he has lots of business.

Are you talking about SEO or Adwords? Both are not cheap that's why Google's share price is so high.

SEO on Google will take some time so the fastest way for you is Adwords. Just sign up for adwords and go through their training there and you can get traffic almost immediately.

But remember to use the correct keywords and don't go for broad keywords when you are just starting out. Also your landing page must be good to convert visitors and you should also have an email capture form so that you don't waste all those expensive traffic

This is the action plan I would suggest

      1) Identify the top 20 local free ad sites (eg: Craigslist) and put your business description in there. Please provide as much information as possible to make it easy for people to contact you and trust you as a legitimate business.

      2) Try using sites like Groupon to reach out to a massive audience in your locality.

      3) Make sure you put your website link in all your ads or posts.

      4) Create some instructional videos that presell and upload those to youtube. Try to build an audience over there.

      5) Generate some revenue and then use the profits to reinvest in paid ads and SEO.

      Cheers

You'll thank me for this later.

Put a flyer in peoples mailboxes telling them, you will offer a free pc BACKUP service. Use good emotional copy "think of your family pictures" etc... and then tell them you can offer to backup to a cloud service or to backup to an external hard drive, the backup is free but sell them the hard drive or the cloud service offer via your own servers or via an affiliate most people dont know how to do a backup... you will kill it.

          I fully agree with goindeep.

          Your business is local.

Focus on getting your business off the ground in your community first. A flyer on their doorstep with some neat offering like the one mentioned by goindeep would go a long way. Ask them how many time did you have to wipe your computer because it crashed and you lost your valuable information and valuable memories like the pictures...

Take a look at this site for a comparison of backup services. seems so darn cheap.

          Be creative in other words.

Google ranking is only going to help you if you can distinguish yourself from others in your community.

          Good luck.

Putting flyers in mailboxes in the US is against the law unless they have proper postage.

Brilliant! With a little out of the box thinking this concept can be applied to different products/niches. These are businesses waiting to happen.

    1) List it on Google Places

    2) Take advantage of Adwords

    3) Rent a mailing list from the SRDS and target people in your city

    4) Learn offline marketing really well

    5) Make sure you immediately sell again to your new customers - and recurring customers

    6) Do PPC targeting for your city

I'd make a Facebook page and if you can afford it run Facebook ads to your local demographic. I'd place Craigslist ads a couple of times per week as well. To get on Google, add a blog to your site where you discuss different things having to do wither with computer repair (such as useful tips and tricks) or having to do with the local community (such as upcoming events like parades, pictures of how the shop is decorated for the holidays, etc). I'd submit my site to all the major search engines (many free sites where you can do this) and you can find people o Fiverr who can help you with SEO for just $5. Hope this helps!

I'd try SEO before Adwords. It takes a while, but this is the best way for you to keep in touch with the service you provide, to really make a name for it. The hard work you have to do promoting and writing about your service can also teach you how to promote other services and products as well.

The fastest way that comes to my mind is also AdWords. And the results can be quite good, if you do it right. But it's not that cheap...

You want to focus on local seo. I'd get your biz in several local directories and post on craigslist and other sites like that which will give you location credibility.

Once you get into those directories it's all about reputation marketing. Show customers how to leave positive feedback on these review sites because google will take that into account. Also, if you are getting to the top of google but have a bad rep then you screwed yourself anyway.

Blog on topics in your niche and syndicate the crap out of it all over social media while growing your networks.

Cheapo seo is a thing of the past. You have to have a budget for it and you have to know EXACTLY what you are doing...and even then you will still get slapped.

However if you have a lot of hustle, it is 100% possible to create a following on your blog from scratch, and if your content is good and actually helps people, you WILL get ranked in google anyway because you will have built authority on your site

My friend, I commend you for starting your own business. I could suggest you use the viral blogging platform that I use to market.
It is all set up for you already and it is very easy and inexpensive to use.
Blogging allows you to avoid the headaches and expense of a regular site and can get to reach out to even more customers in a much more engaging way.

    Cheers

Do a Google search for "Warrior Forum Local SEO" and you should find a bunch of threads on here to help you out. Or you could head over to the WSO section and buy an inexpensive local seo product

Looks like everyone has covered the marketing aspect already.

I'd just like to add as a way of getting a little bit extra money out of your clients, install services like MyPCBackup for them (through your own afflink, of course). Just tell them it's a complimentary service they can use.

If you do 100 client visits a month and install MyPCBackup on all of them, that's an extra $600 right there.

Be creative and find other CPA/CPS offers related to your niche to promote as well. There's a lot of em'.

Wouldn't a local strategy based on mobile marketing be a good idea, especially when you're thinking about the future of your business? I saw a website just a few days ago that said local search traffic through smartphones has gone up like five times in the past 2 years or so. It might just be an estimate but judging from the customer's standpoint, if your computer is toast, you're more likely to rely on mobile searches instead of borrowing your neighbor's laptop.

I used to sell computer services over craigslist quite well.. You need to post in other places, and setup some flyers at a local grocery store. This will get you more business than you can handle. Small tiny classified ads in news papers work extremely well for this type of work.

If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't worry about targeting Google.

    I would target Facebook.

Why? Because most of your competitors are probably (not) targeting Facebook.

    Now... who do you target?

Simple. You target your ideal demographic.

For Computer Repair, I would assume it would be Male & Female 50+

This is a very simple target audience on Facebook.

Get your ads in front of the Grandmas and Grandpas that are having trouble looking at the pictures their kids are posting of their great grandkids... because they need computer repair.

Be creative and fun with your ads, knowing this situation.

Also, you can target locally on Facebook...

Soooo... if you are even (more) creative with your ads, by having your actual picture as the image... you'll become the local celebrity in less than a week and you'll have people stopping you at Starbucks saying...

"Hey, aren't you that guy I see all over Facebook that does computer repair?"

    Yep... it's that easy.

    Have fun!

    Enjoy the spotlight.

    1. Get a good domain name
    2. Start a blog and share articles through bookmarks (socialposter.com), ezinearticles, etc.
    3. Create a few Youtube videos and share, of course
    4. Setup a FB page and offer coupons for likes and fans
    5. Offer freebies on contest sites
    6. Don't spend a dime on Adwords on this competitive niche, just go viral.

    Good luck!

If you want to promote it yourself, you should try to learn some things about SEO. Try writing articles about your business and to link the KeyWords to your site.
