How do you use AdWords without getting your a** handed to you?

I've read Perry Marshall's stuff. From time to time I try to run an AdWords campaign.

I always end up losing money.

How do you use AdWords without getting your a** handed to you?

I'd really like to get good at using AdWords so I can just pump more money in and make more money back.

I do well with other forms of paid advertising. AdWords and pay-per-click just kills me.

Maybe it's because I stink at Math?

      Hi Jason,

I've made money with adwords, and I've lost money with adwords, and the funny thing is, when I lose money, it's because I have other stuff going on and I don't give the adwords campaigns the time and attention they need.

Campaigns need to evolve and change, so you need to almost nurture them in a way. I'm not great at that part, so that's why I stay away from adwords these days. Especially when I have other projects running or whatever.
      Mostly lol.

Anyway, that's how it is with me, hope that helps, could be different for others...

You can limit your adword commitment, by time or by cost, no?

First I just want to say Perry's book is great...BUT it's a starting point, it's not the end all be all of your Adwords education. Adwords and PPC in general is a numbers game with lots of variables. If you’re not tracking the keyword conversions from your ad's you already assed out. (for the most part)

Second you really need to structure your campaigns, ads, websites and landing pages correctly. You need to be testing your ad's on a regular basis.

Third, there are market variables and cost and profit factors you really need to think about. How much you can make on the front end and back end, etc. You also need to realize the system itself is inherently designed to weed out less savvy marketers.

        Much love,
        Dave

You can't try Adwords, you have to be committed to it and you need cash reserves to figure it out. You can burn through cash real fast if you get it wrong.
And even once you figure it out, not every campaign will be a winner. Some will break even, some will fail and some will make you so much you won't know what happened.
But even when you lose money, you can still make a long-term profit if you've been making a list with those visitors.

      Thanks for the great insights.

...Do you primarily drive traffic to a squeeze page first, then the offer?

I understand you need to "trick" Google a little if you're going to use a squeeze page. Except I think I messed that all up when I tried. ...I understand you need some outgoing links and some content on site?

Anyone teaching you to trick Google is setting you up for failure. Gaming Google may work in the short term. But think about this...Google is one is the richest companies in the world with some of the smartest people in the world working for them...do you really think you can outsmart them, or even want to try?

Obey our new Google overlords, do as they say which is provide a quality honest visitor experience and you shall be rewarded...

        Much love,

If you want to keep your quality score decent, and avoid getting slapped, then you need some content. It seems it's gotten to the point that you have to do complete on-page seo for an entire site.

here's something a lot of people selling products related to your adwords quality score never mention: you may have a minimum click of 3-10 cents, but you'll never land on the first page with that minimum bid!

All that the QS does is give you permission to play the game...

It has similarities to stock investing, especially day and swing trading, that way. Set stops. Cut your losses. Let your winners ride.

something i learnt here...it lowers my cost for adwords to the bare minimum

the ? technique to lower your cost per click

basically after the domain name you put ? then related key words

    ie. massage-guru.com?how-to-massage

it should lower your cost per click because google's algorithm looks at that and thinks its more relevant so they will lower your cost per click for relevancy

    works for me

Just give them what they want...

The reason for the "Google Slap" was not to make our lives more difficult. It was done to clean up the search engine.

All Google cares about is user experience. In other words, they want quality content for their visitors... It makes a lot of sense, actually.

This really benefits us by forcing those of us that want to be successful to:

      -create better landing pages
      -write better ads
      -bid more strategically

By penalizing us for not following their rules, Google brings out the best in us.

Check out "Dominate Google Adwords." at http://www.pay-per-click-secret.com

It's a free report. All you have to do is opt in... it's worth it. In fact, I found this report to be more helpful than anything else that I've come across.
Most of the other PPC info is overcomplicated...

        Kirk is spot on.

Adwords is as much a mental game as it
is a game of geeks tweaking and testing
ads, ad groups and landing pages.

It's highly unlikely that you'll come right
out of the gate and make money - unless
you do what I teach, but that's another
        story.

        There's a good reason there's so much
talk about Adwords - and that it's so
        competitive. Because when you solve
        the puzzle, it works.

        There are a only a few niches I wouldn't
recommend a newbie attempt - but there
are so many products out there that
anyone can still get in the game - most
Adwords marketers are NOT very good.

So just a little dedication and diligence -
and guts for the game - can bring on
success in a short time - IF you're
        committed.

I have made quite decent returns on Adwords and if there were 3 things that you need to be successful with them in my opnion it would be:

          1. tracking (right down to the keyword so you know which are bringing in the sales)

          2. Ad copy ( A compelling ad targeted to individual keywords)

          3. Very targeted Keywords tightly clustered in Adgroups (i mean really targeted!)

The main thing that I have learnt in the past about Adwords is "It is not how may clicks you get!".

Make your keywords VERY targeted and you will get sales, sometimes you don't but this may well be down to the product you are promoting because of course you need a good product as well!

          Just my 2 pence!

          Good Luck

I could not agree more with both Kirk and X.

AdWords is not actually all that complicated, but it requires something very much lacking in many marketers - DISCIPLINE.

Discipline to set up your campaigns, sites and copy the way Google wants so that your account's QS becomes an ASSET with each new profitable, high performing campaign...

Discipline to set up conversion testing and analytics...

Discipline to split test ads and landing page copy...

Once you have a properly built campaign and can easily identify what's working and eliminate what's not it is readily apparent why so many lose money.

Google will SPEND YOUR MONEY until they use up your budget because you've told them to. If you leave a bunch of crap in your campaigns stealing your money, you're paying the "stupid tax".

Having said that, now reconsider what Kirk and X said about committing to the process and it being as much about mindset as anything else.

Do the work. Spend the $. Measure the results. Make the adjustments. Count the money.

            Hit me up anytime, Jason.
