How important are the keyword tags on blog posts?

I am inexperienced at wordpress, but beginning to use it. I am using a feed script
which posts products automatically. This saves a lot of time, but I like to go in and
make a few comments on the posts sometimes.

It has got me to wondering how important the keyword tags are. I used blogger
for a long time, and when they came out, there were no keyword tags. I don't
think I have caught up on all the posting of those tags to my old blogs, now that
you can do that.

In addition, can you use tags that are about that page, but you don't find that
particular keyword on the page? Hope that makes sense. The search engines
do it, sort of a LSI thing...

Thanks.

It's web 2.0 so every little bit helps.
Also, I wouldn't put tags in a page that aren't related to the page itself.
You'll just be trying to fool the bots but worse...the reader.

Keyword tags are VERY important. Google can "find" your post through the keyword tag.

I was very pleased today to find my blog in the #3 spot of a Google search through the keyword tag! My niche keyword phrase! Yay!

      So, yes, they are important.

Steve, say it is about gifts, This could be a gift for people, several keywords.

I have always just put the keyword in the tag that is on the page, but I was wondering if say it could be a womans gift in the tag, but was not mentioned on the page, is that improper?
