What is the best free program for editing youtube videos?

Hi,

I would really appreciate any advice on which program to use to edit youtube videos that are not my own. I work in sales and would like to remove some gaudy text and music from videos I am sharing with prospective clients. They are not company videos.

Thanks!

Ruth

I personally use Screenflow (for the Mac) for everything.

If you're on a PC, you can use Camtasia.

They are lightweight programs that can do most everything you need.

Or, if you're on a Mac and want something more (mainstream) - you can use iMovie

    Good Luck!

It is really easy to use - you can delete sections of a video, add pictures, music and other video.

There's no easy/practical way to "remove" text from a rendered video (ie a video that's on YouTube), because the text in a video is no longer "editable" after it has been rendered. A much more practical solution would be to "cover up" the existing text with a solid color or image (often referred to as a "lower third"), and then put your new text on top of that.

As for the music... if the audio track does not also contain a voiceover, then it's easy to swap out the music for any other music track you want. If the audio DOES contain a voiceover, on the other hand, then there's no way to separate the music from the voiceover, so you would be stuck with it.

If you're content with the limitations described above, then any decent video editor will do the job. I like Sony Vegas the best, but it's not free. Chris mentioned Camtasia, which is a great program for creating "screen capture" video, but it wasn't really designed to edit existing videos (and it's also not free).

If you're on a modern Windows OS, then Windows Movie Maker may do what you need, as long as your needs are REALLY basic, and you don't require a very "professional-looking" end product. Most of the other "free" video editors I know of are pretty limited in functionality as well, except for this one...

Free Edition - Advanced Screencast & Rapid eLearning Authoring Tool

^ The only problem with Active Presenter is that it's primary purpose is similar to Camtasia, in that it was designed more for creating screenshot videos, than for editing existing videos. But it may be your best "free" option, if you want a professional-looking end product.

Also, it should go without saying, but make sure you have permission from the creator of the original video before you edit it and re-upload it... otherwise you could get yourself in a lot of legal trouble.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

Maybe you could obtain the rights to edit videos that you don't hold copyright to, but it would definitely be worth asking about before you did this.

Windows Movie Maker is supremely easy to use. Just drag and drop a few clips onto the program (most formats are supported) and immediately they're assembled into order.
