Did Warrior Forum going NO FOLLOW reduce the volume of spam?

I sure hope so. The amount of copied and paste postbot generated posts were getting out of control.

Sadly, going NF didn't solve the other ways people try to 'leverage' WF's fast 'indexability' I'm still seeing many lktw threads here. Probably no way to block these unless everyone chimes in regarding obvious kw sniping.

      That´s a big problem of all public forums...

      Regarding the no-follow and spam, well I am kinda new so I don´t know. However, no-follow still helps with SEO... Wikipedia is no-follow, too.

    We still get that, but it's largely limited to cookie stuffers.

    Overall, the switch to nofollow seems to have had a large impact on the total spam levels. This includes a lot of the pointless nonsense that was being manually posted by "SEO experts." Combined with the efforts of two moderators in the SEO section, that part of the forum has gotten much more useable.

    There is also the addition of the "forum spam filter" that seems to block a fair bit of the garbage.

    We've finally gotten back to the point where manually submitted spam seems to outnumber the auto-posted and human-automation stuff.
    It's pretty rare to see a genuinely interesting topic here, especially in the main forum.
    Rare? Depends on what you find interesting, I suppose.

    The migration of the most serious and specifically useful conversations to the sub-forums was predicted. No-one was surprised by that.

    What did surprise some people was the large influx of new members whose skills in English are not up to the task of discussing complex or jargon-specific topics clearly in this language. That has lead others to assume a lower bar for posts, and left a number of the more experienced people so frustrated they've become overtly hostile.

    I'm not really sure what should be done about the "English as a poor second language" folks.

      Hey Paul,

      Is there a section/thread on the WF where the growth challenges of the community are discussed openly?

      I'm a part of a several MUCH smaller communities and I've been watching their discussions on the topic as they start to get a bit bigger. I'd be interested to see how you guys work out those challenges here with such a large community.

        There isn't even a private area where they're actively discussed. We just deal with things.

        We have a couple of tech guys who are absolute wizards. We have a crew of moderators who each have years of experience with forums. At least 4 of us have been members here since 1997. We just know who to contact and what info to give when something needs worked on. Things get done.

        It's all about communication, and having a team that trusts each other.
