WordPress: How do I delete "Categories"?

My sites are only ever going to be 5 content pages, max.

I do not want any categories, only the post titles on the right sidebar, like this: www.mysite.com/1starticle and www.mysite.com/secondarticle

So how do I make the appropriate settings?

For posts, you have to have at least one category to put them in, however you don't need to have the list of categories listed anywhere on your site.

For the sidebar, just put the 'recent posts' widget in the sidebar and not the 'categories' widget.

If you are only going to add 5 pages total, you could also just make 'pages' and not 'posts'. That way no category is needed regardless.

You might have chosen a theme that does not support widgets? I keep my widgets on the right. Themes come with default widgets. Go to appearance, widgets, and click on the widgets you do want, which sounds like you want recent posts, maybe tags, too? Once you choose your own widgets, the default widgets that came with the theme will be overridden by the process of you adding your own widgets.

I'm not doing so bad today, first time using wordpress
and I've got 2 sites up.

To make your pages show up when you've only got pages on your site go to your Settings> Reading screen and select 'A static page' under the 'Front Page Displays' heading.

Then just choose which page you want to the the front one.
