Recommended Wordpress Security

Having lost five sites to hackers last year, I'm paranoid now, whenever I set up a new Wordpress installation.

Not being at all techie, I look for the easiest solutions.

The first step is to Change the Wordress Username.
All new Wordpress installations automatically have 'Admin' as the username, and the hackers know this.

After that, I've found a couple of plugins which have worked beautifully for me (even finding malicious code 18 months old, on a domain which had been deinstalled completely.

Both the FREE plugins are:
  • Wordfence Security, and:
    Better WP Security

I actually use both together, because there are slight differences in them, and they don't clash with each other.

I can highly recommend either, or both of these plugins, which are ideal for a technophobe like me.

Do you have any you consider are better?

Cheers

I also use Wordfence Security but I've just started using the BulletProof Security Plugin as well. I heard good things about it so I'm testing it out on one of my sites.

Yup, Bulletproof, Better Wp and Wordfence are all a good bet IMO. They all do a marvellous job.

Be care with Bulletproof, if you rename your table prefixes or do any "one-click hardening" you could end up in a real mess!

Michael, can you please elaborate because I haven't found the need to change table prefixes or do any "one-click hardening"- yet!

For me, setting it all up looked confusing at first but (thankfully) the instructions from the plugin author were easy to follow. Once set up, I clicked on the "Security Status" tab and it showed all green meaning that my site was protected.

I used to use login lockdown, but they have undated it in a number of years.

Maybe I should try and fork it.
