How many websites are there?

I was asked a question recently and I actually couldn't find the answer.

The question was:

"How many websites are there?".

Obviously this is increasing as we speak, but does anyone know what the stats are?

I count a website, if it has been developed by someone with some content on it. I don't mean a holding page or a redirect.

Also, I would imagine there are millions of domain names taken which don't yet have a website.

So does anyone know how many websites there are, that are actually live?

My guess is 20,000,000 (twenty million).

What's the answer guys and girls?

    You can go to google, do a google search for "click here" and get a decent idea from the results that are found (located in the upper-right hand corner of the page). It's much more than a million

    If you go to Yahoo search, you'll get a higher number 'cause they were around B.G. (before Google).

    The only intelligent answer to your question that I have is..

    "A Lot"

      Grant ... how could searching on Google for "click here" show
      even a ballpark figure for this? I`ve seen some sites where that
      term is like some sort of biblical mantra ... :rolleyes:

    I'd say around 300 billion pages (not sites)

    Cuil says it indexes 150 billion pages. So 300 billion total is my guess.
