Why is it so hard to find great ebook cover designers?

I'm talking quality designers, with portfolios that don't look like template work. Guys that design realistic looking ecovers that engage the viewer and make him want to know more about the product.

Actually, I know the answer...

They are out of my price range.

Unfortunately, I've had to ask for refunds on more than one occasion from designers here at WF for numerous reasons including:

- Horrible communication (days to answer and respond to emails)

- poor quality work (literally only adding a title to a template)

- Products that look nothing like what they display in their portfolio/thread

I must admit - I am a tough cookie to please when it comes to design. I am very particular and have a high standard. There has only been one designer here at the WF that has been able to consistently meet my requirements - Nathan Dasco:

http://www.warriorforum.com/warriors...you-order.html

His designs exude with professionalism and are unique. They actually look like physical products!

Nathan hasn't been responding to my emails (I hope he is okay after the Typhoon) so can anyone recommend a WF designer that can match his designing skills at around the same price?

Thanks!

So had you just used a better, more expensive designer right from the start you probably would have saved yourself a lot of time and money. Many people make this mistake. Using cheap services can actually turn out more expensive in the longrun. Go for quality from the start. It always pays off.

Your ecover is the face of your product so you simply cannot afford to be cheap when it comes to your ecover image. It's very important you get it right. A cheap cover will cheapen your product.

"Why is it so hard to pay great ebook cover designers?" is a more apt title.

Broaden the price range and you open up further viable options...

I've been entertaining the thought of getting back into Graphic Design. After seeing yet another complaint like this, I just might do it for a short time.

To be honest, I thought it would be quite easy to find good designers who can handle ECovers. They're a pretty simple design task.

Maybe you're just setting your budget too low which is why you're encountering so many problems. Designers who sell their work for below their worth often have to take on too much work to make a living. In those cases, they're too busy to communicate efficiently.

      Cheers,

      Nick

Know where to find great talent at a great price. And the argument that a more expensive designer is more skilled one is bullshit.

I actually have a few buddies that are designers and there number 1 complaint is people don't really know what they want in the first place.

They give vague instructions and when the image comes back they are not happy.

It's important that you are super clear with what you are looking for. Once you establish that, then creating that exact image is not that difficult

Hey guys, thanks to you all for chiming in with your input. I agree with many of your points. My budget does have to increase - but that designers here that I've hired are not Fiverr priced designers. I've hired guys with great portfolios, lots of positive feedback, and in the $20 - $30 price range. I've just been disappointed with their results.

TheRealDudeMan, where do you suggest I search to fine good designers besides the For Hire section here at the WF?

I am looking for someone that can design like Nathan (whose thread I linked in my original post at the top). I've used the search function extensively and have gone thru the for hire section quite a bit.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have explicit instructions and know exactly what i want.

Most top quality products that you see swarming the marketplace had design houses do their work and they paid good money.

You should consider what you are selling, how you wish to depict your product (and yourself) and what realistic financial outlay you are willing to set for such a venture. Ultimately you reap what you sow and you get "nowt for nowt".

When I hire people in Warriors for hire, I already consider myself fortunate.

$30 shouldn't be a knock to you if you have a solid business paradigm.

Well, I do know one designer and he's absolutely fabulous. Of course, if you're used to Fiverr designers he is out of that price range. If you have between $47 - $67 and you think you'd like to try him, send me a PM

I don't gain anything from referring him and we're not related. I've found his work exceptional and so I refer him to anyone who's interested. FYI

I published a short story ebook over the summer and found a great designer on Fiverr. The key is to get one of the top rated ones and look at samples of their work.

There are also websites that sell pre-designed ebook covers for every genre out there. Most only sell the covers once, so your getting an exclusive design. These can usually be bought for under $100 and they'll even add your title, name, etc for you. The benefit of these is you know exactly what you're getting before opening your wallet.

One of the biggest things you can do for success with ordering graphic design services is to have detailed specifications ready for the designer.

There are lot of great designers right here on the Warrior Forum, but you
also will usually get what you pay for. If you skimp on the money then
you cannot expect great results. Just think about the artist and how much
time you would put in for $30.

    Graphic designers are like copywriters.

    Fast. Perfection. Affordable.

Only when you're very lucky do you get to pick two of the three. But only count on being able to pick just one.

They are not difficult to find at all. Fiverr is a great place to start. You may have to hire 5 or more designers for the same project to test the quality of their work. Once you do that for several projects you will know who the quality designers are and save $$ going forward.
