HostGator Servers Down For Over 1 Hour Now

Anybody else notice this? This seems to be fairly poor service, that's money down the drain for a lot of people... I used to be with godaddy hosting, as much as i hated godaddy, the servers never went down...

I'm out too. This is what I got in response to my helpdesk ticket:

      Hello,

Thank you for contacting HostGator. We are currently experiencing an emergency network outage at our Provo Datacenter. Unfortunately, we do not have any additional information on the situation at this time. Please refer to http://forums.hostgator.com/network-outage-t302250.html for further updates. If you have any questions, please let us know.

      Best Regards,

I've got a handful of dedicated servers at Hostgator, and they are (all) down.

I'm a bit furious, because I'm in the middle of doing a soft-launch for my Internet Entrepreneurs Club. Damn the luck!

Here's where you can see the status:

I recommend that you change to more reliable hosting. VeeroTech has been praised here on the WF and I'm using it myself. I switched from Hostgator and Godaddy, and haven't looked back

I looked around to change when i had HG before for some of my niche sites. And I finally settled on KnownHost. I moved my clients onto my vps, and I host all my own sites there too.

Their tech support is awesome, they transferred all my sites and my clients' too and they give Christmas bonuses.

I'd second that. I moved all my sites over to Brent last weekend and can't say enough about how good the service and support is. HG is now in the rear view mirror, which is where I should have put them long before now.

My sites are up now but I have been having load time issues ever since they have switched. I have contacted them several times questioning the load speed and their response has always been, "its loading fast on our end." HG used to be a great reliable hosting solution but its obvious they have abandoned that "reliability" model. I will have to start shopping..such a PITA...so many sites to move.

Well, how about this? I just signed up for new hosting the other day-- I switched from Hostgator... Anyhow, my new hosting company just sent me an email to let me know that they have backed up my files successfully, and said "it seems that the hosting server (Hostgator) is down" and then continue to say, "we'll check back in 20 minutes or so to complete the migration". LOL!

Basically, I am in the middle of switching to my new hosting company and since Hostgator is down, it is slowing my actual process of moving to my brand new server! Ha! Oh the luck!

Yes, it sure is. At the same time, this is just a reminder of why I made a good decision to switch hosting companies. I've been with Hostgator since 2007. This is absolutely terrible. Cannot wait to be over and done with it altogether.

I know what you mean about having a lot planned for today. It certainly doesn't feel good knowing that my website visitors are going to be frustrated-- my customers who have memberships.... Oh my gosh, not good.

I was unable to send and receive emails this morning then when this has been resolved, my sites don't loaded for about 1 hour. Everything is working fine now. Hopefully, I also have a VPS with another company where my better sites are hosted.

Here is the answer from HG to my ticket: "Unfortunately at this time there is indeed an issue with our Provo, UT. Datacenter that is affecting some of our customers.
I can assure you that our admins are working as diligently as possible to address the issues.
We have created a forum post to follow this issue and it will be updated as information becomes available.

We apologize greatly for the present circumstance and look forward to seeing this issue resolved soon.

It's no secret that since they were bought out Hostgator has been a shadow of their former self. If the problems are really that bad why not move on instead of complaining about these constant problems?

None of this surprises me. Not even a little.

    Hostgator is garbage:
    - http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...s-traffic.html
    - http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-all-down.html
    - http://www.warriorforum.com/internet...hostgator.html
    - http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-want-out.html

I have no idea why people still suggest that in 2013. It's terrible. It's not even the same "Hostgator" anymore, not since summer 2012, and is nothing more than an EIG brand now. Anybody still using it should leave ASAP. I've been warning people on this forum for months and months and months. This is EIG, and this is how they operate. It's crap.

There are better hosts. Use one!

    Also don't use:
    - Godaddy
    - Yahoo
    - 1&1
    - Dreamhost
    - the 50+ EIG brands, including Hostgator, Bluehost, Justhost, iPage, Fatcow, etc
    - amateur/"kiddie" hosts

You'll just have the same issues there.

This is pretty crazy. I am on some lists of some 7 figure personal development guys and they send out apology emails because their HG servers went down meaning that all of their sites must have been down for some period today.

It's not crazy that HG servers went down and affected so many people (it's to be expected with all of HG's crap lately), it's that these millionaire marketers are still relying on HG for their business. I'm curious how much $$ they lost during their down time...couple grand at least. Dude was in the middle of a product launch as well >_< so that has to hurt

You should also wonder if they're lying, and completely full of $hit too. Around here, it's very common. Lots of BSers and con artists just suckering money from others that are gullible enough to believe them. You have to watch yourself! Be a skeptic.

Something like this should be a warning sign that your "guru" is a faker.

That's true, but thankfully i verified the whois information prior to posting. I'm pretty sure since the guy is pretty genuine he got suckered in to having his site hosted (likely through an affiliate business partner since he's good in personal development - but not so much in IM) so i don't blame him for having hosted with HG, I blame him for not knowing better than to have his entire business hosted with HG.

For most things online I am already in doubt until evidence comes around to prove otherwise

            Based on what?

If true, I'd question the competence of somebody that made thousands or more from a $10 "unlimited" account at a crappy budget host.

But I often doubt it's true at all. It betrays them, and shows them to be a fraud.

In the hands of many, "IM" is not really marketing. Most of these folks are not even educated in what marketing really is. To these people, it's all about cheating Google, writing schlock "articles", etc. They lie and have a severe ego issue.

When guys refer to each other by name, it's almost like a fraternity atmosphere around here. "Wow, Johnny Rotten slept with 25 women! He's the man! The guru! All hail Johnny!" But the truth is, you really don't know how successful they are. Its often ego stroking ... that the person himself started via fake names! (The "sales funnel letter" is often complete BS.)

As they say, "those that can, do". And "those that can't, teach".
But in "IM" it's often "those that fail (and thus lie about success), teach".

It's always hilarious when somebody cries about losing $XYZ because of downtime at a cheesy little Walmart-grade host like Hostgator. And it's pretty much always an exaggeration to make others want to feel sorry for them, or to try and drum up bandwagon anger.

This place does, of course, have some great and genuine people. But they're harder to find. And they're not using budget "unlimited" hosting, "SEO" hosting, etc, all while bragging about making $XXXX money per month day, week, month, blue moon, or whatever, using a method that you too can learn for only $49.95! ("Act now! Limited slots available!")

To be honest, some of this should be common sense stuff.

But whatever. People believe what they want, waste money as they want.

For the record, I noticed after EIG took over the support became very slow, I was wanting to change for other reasons but I transferred all my sites to Wired Tree and I'm very happy about it.

Many thanks for the advice, your site was very informative.

For the record he has a few dedicated servers for his sites with HG.

I've met the guy in person and spoken to him. He's not great at marketing, which is why he has to hire consultants to help him arrange his products and promote them, but his products are strong so I like him.

This is all a tad bit off topic so I'll leave it here regarding his "trustworthiness" or whatever. But there is definitely little trustworthiness regarding HG's performance. For this thread at least that is certain.

Thanks for the recommendations and mentions here guys. Glad to hear the kind words.

@heavysm - if you're interested in a trial account, let me know and we can get something set up for you to test.

My site was down for a while this morning/afternoon but then was suddenly back and working again. I only just signed up with HG about a month ago because I had heard that they were better than GD. I was hoping it was true but from reading this thread, sounds like this has happened more than once.

I was with Hostgator for about 8 years. I recently left them because of all the never-ending problems. I haven't looked back.

For those interested I moved over to LiquidWeb. Much better.

Same here. Nothing out of the ordinary. Sometimes this stuff gets blown way out of proportion,. esp a huge company like HG....just like all the pr that said they didn't pay their affiliates.....I've gotten some nice checks, and very timely, and all seems up and up...

BUT, not being taken lightly, all this by me ( Yoda speak)

It's really not a bad idea for them to have their own site on a different server or in a different data center than their clients sites. At times like this, when a hosting company has client sites down, their own site on a different server/network/dc allows them to have a means to communicate with clients and provide support.

Actually, yeah I was....didn't notice anything, no down time for me...maybe I was lucky, who knows.

I've used HG for almost 8 years, and it's my nature to loyal--I guess I'm old-school, don't just get a "divorce" at the drop of the hat....and yes, I make a decent commission from HG too.......but that doesn't mean I blindly support them.

So I am not just saying good things about them cuz I make $$ from promoting them, just from my experiences....

Many of the HG detractors on this and other threads have an interest in promoting other web hosts (you included it seems), similar to what I've seen in many other topics on WF, so you can't believe everything on here....but I don't like to "go down with the ship" either, as I ain't the captain......

So, I'll be contemplating this deeply and waiting for the right path to be shown....

(and, well, I've already got a "test" account at Inmotion, as I've heard some good things about them)

Everything that's been said has been true. I recall specifically pointing out when EIG first acquired them that it was their history to have issues like this. I was told I was "self promoting" and didn't know what I was talking about.

HostGator isn't the first acquired host that they've pretty much destroyed and most likely won't be the last.

It's kind of one of those "I told ya so" moments...

Mark my words, the problems will continue, and will only get worse.

I'll need to spend some time and dig up those old posts in my post history...as long as the mods didn't delete them.

I've never heard of so many "raid" failures in my 10+ years in this industry as there have been since EIG acquired HostGator. That's their "lies" on covering up moving datacenters until KPmedia brought it up over at WHT. THEN the whole issue came out about their "dedicated" servers actually being VPS's...but that's a whole other subject.

One instance before the move came out was that IP's were turning up in different locations "After" the so called raid array was fixed. It was never failed hardware, it was a lie to cover up moving.

I was shocked when I migrated a customer using a HostGator dedicated server & found a vnet interface. For those who don't know, vnet is a "virtual" adapter, IE VPS.

I blew the whistle on Hostgator almost immediately.
              Before that it was Netfirms.
              Before that Bluehost.
              Before that...

Note the date of one of my earliest posts at WHT:
Web Hosting Talk - View Single Post - Anyone leaving HostGator because of the EIG takeover?

But I was posting about it the month before. This site, that site, many sites.

EIG screwed me 3 times from 2002 to 2007 (or thereabouts), so I now follow their activity. If they are about to buy hosts I'm using, I flee immediately to avoid the fallout. And then I warn others. This Hostgator mess is the first time it's taken this long to go tits up, but it was inevitable.

Smart folks listen. But some refuse to believe, and have to experience for themselves. Sucks for those that do. I know. I was there. Lost databases, lost emails, days of downtime, etc. Not fun at all.

I wanted to say thank for you excellent writeup about EIG in your sig. It was your article that inspired me to move my remaining sites on Hostgator to WiredTree. Needless to say, I'm grateful considering the circumstances.

If you're still on Hostgator, now's the time to move.

Log into Cpanel and download your backups. Then start moving sites one by one until you're done.

This is burying your head in the sand syndrome. Myself, KP, KingFish are giving you advice in advance because it will happen to you.

Yes, I have another hosting interest. Yes, I'll happily recommend good competitors that I respect (that was HG when owned by Brent). But yes, I'm offering this advice so you don't get caught out.

You guys think Hostgator is bad? Try Big Brain Global. My site has been down for 9 hours and counting. Sadly this isn't the first time I've noticed significant downtime. I've just opened a scathing ticket. The funny thing is that my site has received more traffic today than any other day despite the downtime, which is why I didn't notice it until now. Who knows how much money the site would have generated today if it was still up.

Have you tried contacting them? I knnow Brian is active over on webhostingtalk.com - have you tried accessing the site(s) from a different location? Perhaps your IP had become blocked in the firewall, 9 hours is a long time but have not heard of any outages there...

17 hours and counting now, and of course traffic is at zero. The worse thing is that I just signed up with another host, but can't transfer my site because everything is down. I just hope that I can do something before the site loses rankings due to downtime, which is a very real possibility now.

I've contacted them, and had to contact them 8 hours after their first message 9 hours ago saying they were "working quickly to resolve it." I can understand if this was the first time it happened, but it's been bad experience after bad experience with Big Brain Global.
