Learning to design a website

Hi all,

I recently got my domain name and hosting launched. I have installed wordpress and have got my theme going, but I can't seem to figure out how to get it to look extremely professional. I'm having trouble getting it to a satisfactory appearance and editing it to be 100% uniquely my own.

Is this a problem where I need to learn CSS or some other coding? I currently know very very little.

If so, is there any suggestions on how to learn this stuff on a budget?

Getting a good "Responsive Theme" makes the customization very easy so get yourself a responsive theme that will help a lot. A lot of themes are really hard to customize to your likings especially the free ones.

    Hope that helps.

  • What theme are you using?

Not all themes are created equal. However, I recommend you look into HTML, PHP, and CSS. I am not saying you should learn to be a programmer, but you can load a demo wordpress website somewhere on your hosting account and upload a theme and start messing with it. Every step, stop and learn what you did. Learn just the very basics of these three languages and you will see websites in a different way and you will be able to make small changes to themes that go a long way.

You should also visit the Warrior Forum Website Design section and browse Google for good free resources to reference as you mettle with your website. The best kind of learning for this type of skill (programming), in my opinion, is hands on learning.

Honestly if you have a bit of cash, just hire someone to do it for you.

Don't get caught up in the set up stuff as that will slow you down to get your business going. Good idea to spend a few bucks at the beginning so that you can start generating income

You should probably get that outsourced. If your site is a real winner, you'll make back the initial investment in outsourcing quickly.

Some themes are much easier to use than others. You can outsource that kind of work pretty cheaply. You can, literally, waste hours upon hours trying to tweak a theme.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I may go with outsourcing it (while I learn myself in the meantime) if it's not overly expensive. How much does it run normally? Or I guess a better way to phrase it is how much does a GOOD service cost normally?

While I know HTML and CSS, I really hardly require this anymore in the time of age of Wordpress. It really comes down to selecting the right theme. I admit, there is a zillion of themes out there but very few ultimately satisfy. But those themes are out there if you just look long enough. It's really more a trial/error thing and then experimenting with the themes and the options/widget placement etc. Most of the time, simplistic themes/designs work best. Think about whether worrying about the "right design" and possibly outsourcing the design-side of things is not wasted time/money.
