Travel niche monetizing question

Booking.com offers only a 4% commission + some "performance incentives", which I have no idea what they are at the moment. Hotels.com offer 5.5%, and so is Tingo.com.

From previous talks with someone around here, the main problem I noticed is that in the travel niche, people might call the agency to make a reservation instead of booking online. I don't know if that applies to hotel rooms or not, but let's assume for a moment that it doesn't.

My question then would be, isn't a 4% or 5.5% commission too small? I mean, this isn't Amazon where the conversion rates are high, even though the price they pay (depending on the demographics, of course) can often be over $500.

I would go with Agoda purely because it's the only company I would book through.

They offer 35-60% commission, but this is based on their commission.

Well, it really depends on the type of traffic that you can drive. For example, if you have a travel related blog that gets consistent traffic and your readers like your content, then I don't see a problem converting them at this rate.

Besides that, I'm pretty sure that if you are able to drive massive amounts of traffic that is targeted then the numbers can really add up. And I don't feel that their affiliate program should be compared to that of Amazon.com. I could be wrong, but then that's my opinion.

On a side note, I think affiliates today are too assessed the sales percentage. I mean, there's absolutely nothing wrong in going for a high commission product or offer. But at the end of the day, what really matters is the quality of the offer and how well it matches your audience. If you are able to market a very good quality product to a laser targeted audience, then I feel that the commission you earn can substantially grow.
