I am building a content site.

My main concept keyword is

Ceramic Tile

This has good search volume and fairly low competition.

My tier 2 pages will be things like

ceramic tile patterns
Ceramic tile installation
ceramic tile floors
ceramic tile walls

My tier 3 pages will be things like

ceramic tile pattern ideas
How to install ceramic tile
Choosing ceramic tile for your home

Things like that

I have done a lot of research on my competition and this is where I need a little help.

When I look at these keywords in google. I start researching the competition and they are

Home depot
Lowes
How To
This old house

Sites like that.

Well I look at the links to these pages and there are no links to the pages, however when I look at the links to the site there are thousands of links to the site itself.

That is where I need advice.

Which is more important the links to the page for the keyword that I am trying to rank for, or the links to the site itself?

Thanks in advance for your help. I really appreciate it.

I would try joining in and contributing some content/posts to dedicated industry related forums - like you've done here.

    I found https://www.google.co.uk/#q=%22ceramic+tiles%22+forums when I searched for

    "ceramic tiles" blogs

    (keep the quotes)

    HTH

Maybe change the link in your sig to something related to your post? "making it online"... making what online?

    Assuming you mean success...

The content of your post suggests YOU need to "make it online" first before you can coach anyone else to - do you agree?

Check your link - it appears to be wrong anyway.

    Sorry, just my 2c

You've kind of answered this yourself - it's usually easier to rank individual pages, even against the big sites. So you'll get traffic and sales/commissions from people searching for a particular keyword/product, rather than people finding your site, browsing and then buying or clicking on ads (I don't know what your monetisation will be).

  • They are both equally important as you try to outrank your competition.

You need both on-site link building and off-site link building. Also, you should build links to your homepage and to the inner pages of your website. You should be ranking your inner pages for specific keywords (i.e. long tail) while you rank your home page for a much more competitive keyword.

Websites like those you mentioned in your original post, that rank in the first page because they belong to an authority website, are usually not hard to outrank.
