Does people really open their email ?

Hi Warriors,

Maybe its a stupid question, BUT, Does people really open their email? and even if they're opening it, they just do that to confirm a subscription to a specific website/forum, not to check their inbox everyday for information/offers. (I am doing that too).

I open most of them. Who they are from is as important as the subject line to me.

If you have Aweber, you can check your stats and see what percentage open your mails. Personally, I delete people who don't open mine so I have a very high open rate.

  • If the person who subscribes to your email newsletter is genuinely interested in the information you have to offer, then that same person will look for your email once more. If there is no incentive for that person to check your email, then that person will treat your email just as he/she would other emails that they don't open, or open and just quickly glance.

I believe people will check and take importance in emails from institutions (i.e. banks, family, friends, social networks they frequent) in their lives that they deem are important to them; you need to become something interesting to whoever signs up to your newsletter.

As a freelance writer and author, I use my email very frequently. I open all my emails and if I start getting spam I send it to my spam box so I don't get it any more. On the other hand my husband has an iPhone that has mail set up on it but he rarely opens it. But he is not into technology too much so that could be where the difference lies. It also depends on the person and the position they hold. Great question!!

It's not a stupid question. People are inundated with commercial e-mails, so you have to do something to provide them with value for their time. I'm on many lists myself and I almost unconsciously have developed a feeling for which lists provide me with learning and good advice.

When I open my inbox I select all to delete and deselect only those ones and personal e-mails.

    Of course they do.
I check my email every hour, even more often when I'm on my computer.

I open most of my emails. Like someone else said on here, the person who sends the message is important in whether I open it or not.
Build trust and a relationship with your list, and they'll open almost all of your emails.

I purposefully join other people's lists when I'm interested in their niche. I'm learning about email marketing now. When I get an email from someone in the email marketing & list building niche, I almost always open it, because I'm genuinely interested.
Get people that are genuinely interested in your list, and they will almost always be interested in opening your emails. This is what I'm working on now.

People are opening their email, the real question is whether you get them to click. Many people open ALL of their emails just to reach "Inbox Zero" status (where there are no unopened emails), I do that on one of my inboxes. Not many people have just one inbox nowadays. But they open all of their emails and then they immediately close it. Their purpose is just to reach "Inbox Zero", not to read the email, click the link, read the offer, read the blog post or even buy the product.

And the open rate is not even accurate. If subscribers don't enable images that enables the open pixel to work, and most won't unless you really have images in your email, then the opens won't be registered.

So how do you get them to click?

You can write really short and to the point emails that direct subscribers to the offer or content that is on a blog, Facebook Page, webinar etc. You can provide tons of value and personality in your emails and content. You can also write shock and awe subject lines that they just cannot miss.

In any case, delivering value and having personality is one of the basics. Getting subscribers to click and act is what you really got to do.

And you also have to get the emails delivered and seen. Gmail's Promotions Tab is practically invisible on the Gmail app on a smartphone, and almost half of emails are opened on mobile devices, so you can imagine lots of people are not even seeing your email. Previously, when most promotional emails were actually going into the Promotions Tab (now most are going into Primary or Updates if that is turned on), there was a serious advantage to be gained when using a self-hosted autoresponder, configuring the settings and getting the email into the Primary Tab. I experienced almost double the opens and clicks as my emails that were going into the Promotions Tab. Stats also prove that people click on links in email on mobile devices HALF as often as on desktops.

So the game has changed. You have to get more subscribers, you have to deliver more value, you have to really bring it in your emails.

Of course people open their emails but there are exceptions for IM related users, they would have very low open rate

I am careful while subscribing and rely on my intuition whether i would be spammed to death by the list owner and if answer is no than i go ahead and subscribe. I read all the emails once subscribed.

    Hello,

Yes, I think all the people open the e-mail at least once a day. I have few email accounts, an email manager and I'm with the program opened 24/24h.

The question is: Opening the email mean necessarily read all mails ? I'm full of mails every hour (more than 100 mails). I open the credited mails, but honestly I don't read them.

So, better asking if using mail lists and paying to promote your business through emails worth anymore...

    Thank you, D

I'm not interested in offers unless I've opted in, so the answer is ... if I've opted in, I open it. If I haven't, I send it to spam unread, if it appears to be an offer.

Everyone gets both type of people, some who just sub to you for freebies, and some who sub and read your offers, I have getresponse and it tells me the open rate.

I only open emails from friends, family and from people I am expecting to hear from. Just too much garbage and noise out there.

We have to train people to look for our emails if they want something from us (put that on the capture page). Then they will search for our emails no matter how hard it is. Hopefully, it then becomes a habit...
