    It's really an IT term.

    White Hats = penetration testers; try to hack into or penetrate a network / server to test for vulnerabilties. They do this with permission, and without any malicious intentions.

    Black Hats = Try to hack into or penetrate a network / server, to exploit vulnerabilities. They do this without permission, and with malicious intentions.

    The Internet marketers highjacked this terminology.



    White Hats = People who don't break terms of service, rules of conduct, etc.

    Black Hats = People who break terms of service, rules of conduct, etc.

    It is all in the eyes of the beholder.

    I have seen some folks say if you posts links for your own sites, that is black hat in Google's eyes. But then others seem to think that is fine, unless you do devious things. Of which, I have no idea what devious things would mean.

    Oh, and avoid blackhat like the plague. Google isn't as silly as people would have you believe. They will catch up with you and you will not enjoy the kick in the ass they will deliver.

      I think google is the biggest black hatter. you can spend your savings on white hat SEO, after 4 months, you're on top and guess what google decides to update their algorithm now you're gone. I think as long as you don't damage someone else site do black hat.

    Whitehats - Legally intrigued IT enthusiasts.
    Blackhats - Illegally intrigued IT enthusiasts.

    There is a big difference between Black Hat & White Hat SEO:
    Black Hat SEO - It is a category of unethical and manipulative search engine optimisation. Black hat SEO involves tactics like keyword stuffing, which is including an excess amount of keywords within a single page of web content for the purpose of attracting the search engines. Unfortunately, this tactic is ineffective because the content becomes illegible to the website visitor, and in many cases, keyword stuffing will also cause a website to be penalised by Google.

    White Hat SEO : When using White Hat SEO, keyword research comes into play. A website owner should research keywords that customers are searching for to reach their website. They can then include these keywords naturally within the pages, meta-tags, and descriptions of their website to improve their visibility in the search engines.

    In terms of SEO, white hat methods are legitimate ways to improve search visibility and rankings according to Google's criteria (not any laws).

    Black hat methods are illegitimate/manipulative/spammy ways to improve search visibility and ranks which may be less work but of course carries a greater risk of penalty. Again, this is based on Google's criteria and not necessarily any laws.

    Then Gray hat is in between where it's not clear or depends on how you do it. Most SEO and link building methods are gray hat in that they depend entirely on how they're done, not the link types categorically.

    yeah, you want to try and stay away from the blackhat shorcuts that are out there. They may work for a minute or two but if you become dependent on these type of strategies I think you could find yourself in trouble.

    Example:
    (black hat) - Developing a software that strips the emails of Craigslist users posting in a certain category.

    (white list) - Going through the post and contacting each individual through email introducing yourself and starting a conversation or networking.

    Black hat is shady while white hat is legit, moral and honest....

    Black hats--people who know their optimization tactics are intelligent uses of spam (thus say to heck with the rules and gurus), and aren't afraid of slapping back at Google.

    Its simple. Black hat is spamming Seo. If you will do black hat for your website. Google will hit your website. All your work waste. White hat is without spamming Seo. You get result but slowly safely.

      That's oversimplified. The truth is that 'optimization' of a web page is the opposite of the natural, organic value that page should otherwise have in the search engines. Google wants natural content and natural link development, not all the fancy unnatural tricks both WH and BH factions talk about.

      Google views all artificial attempts to elevate the ranking position or authority of a site (beyond writing useful content) as web spam. So in a real sense, all SEO is 'spamming SEO' and the whole WH vs BH SEO divide is a moot issue. BH are just more aggressive about gaming Google and using automated tools to do so, while using workarounds to deal with 'Google hits back' situations.
