.app seems pretty interesting, which will result in some pretty nice branded sites.

I agree with Taniwha, I see only potential in .app and maybe .inc (for now )

It doesn't matter when you click on the link what it says and it is going to take years before anyone starts saying anything except dot com. People don't read and retain information like that. That's why its so hard to get hyphenated domain names remembered.

If you have a brand you want to protect, buy them all.

    Otherwise... useless.

Good point. By the way, many more new gTLD's are available, eg .web, .site, .shop, .vip, etc, you can get a list here https://gtldresult.icann.org/applica...tus/viewstatus (first few pages are IDN)
There are nearly 2000 new gtld's to be honest, but some of them are IDN.

This is what I'm worried about. I have 3 websites I've worked hard to develop over the years and I own the .com, .net and .org. But do I now have to buy all these other TLDs to protect my brands? That's going to be hundreds of dollars in domains that will just get redirected to the .com. Right now, that's a little out of my reach.

If you have a trademark you can always file a UDRP (basically a trademark dispute requiring a domain) and take it back, but the cost of filing a UDRP is about $1,000 last time I did it. I've done this about a dozen times for my brand clients, but it's significantly more than the price of just getting the domain in the first place. And that's the catch we're all stuck in ... pay now, or pay more later.

Yeah I was thinking that in all honesty .app is the only one that seems cool.

But you want the real truth?

It makes all of the .com domains that you own more precious.

The problem with the whole TLD system is that there is no organization behind it, which basically makes .com the only 'brandable' domain worth having and the others are just a money pit we're forced into to protect the brand from squatters.

The original design was for COM to be a commercial entity, ORG to be a non-commercial organization (charity, club, etc.), and NET to be designated to internet service providers and network-related organizations. And of course .gov and .edu to be used for government and institutional education respectively.

The day they were all open for unrestricted registration (excluding gov and edu) was the day things started going down hill. Adding more TLD's made it worse, and having country-based TLD's that aren't actually restricted to a country was even worse. Now it's just a wild west of crap TLD's that brand owners have to spend money on unnecessarily just to prevent squatters from taking it. If you do the math, I bet it would end up being a bigger racket than Bernie Madoff.

I wouldn't touch any of the new ones. Bunch of garbage that people will not remember or think of when they are typing in those domains.

    and

nodaddy will make lots of $$$ selling domains on all kind of trademarked names and people who buy them will be left with nothing when the â„¢ owners claim them away.

I've owned hundreds of domains . . . mostly .coms with a few .orgs and .nets thrown in.

      Now, I only purchase .coms.

.com is the tld (top level domain) of choice for most all the recognized brands. It is the commercial extension that is the most valuable, trusted, and sought after.

Don't tell me there are no good .com domain names left. There are millions of them and many, many short names available in every niche. You just have to know how to look for them by automating your search.

I personally wouldn't touch any of the new extensions.

Its obvious that the domains have a specific meaning associated. The question now is what happens if you use them in a whole different context. Espacially for the Serps. Maybe not now but in the future...?

For an extreme example what happens if you sell kid toys at .xxx domain ?

.xxx is the perfect example of what I'm talking about. It would be fine if adult sites were restricted to .xxx, but since so many are already .com, .xxx serves no purpose. You can't use it as a universal filter, and the people who are IN that business would rather have a .com.

Alright cause the users prefer the .com domain.
But I wouldnt wonder if the same adult page on a .xxx domain will rank at some point higher then a .com domain.

I think the "founders intent" now has so much cross-over, Google or any search engine would be foolish to consider TLD a factor at all.

Which I think is a shame, really. It could have been done right from the beginning, but there's no going back now. And also, anyone (literally ANYONE) can create a TLD providing you have the proper network and insurance. I thought about making .brand - by my calculations, I could break even on my startup costs just on the number of people who run out and buy every TLD to protect their brand.

Interesting, I wonder if any of these will catch on. I know I have witnessed some of the other additions over the past few years like mobi to be sold at high prices on domain auctions. There may be some value with the .app.. Thanks for sharing!

It is funny how we all react to these extension incursions reflecting our own biases.

ICANN sees this as a great opportunity to grow the web

Domainers are divided - many see it as an expensive threat, a few see opportunity

Consumers are largely oblivious, and likely will stay that way as the tide comes and - ultimately - recedes

Personally, I plan to keep doing what I'm doing, ignoring the new extensions until any of them can prove their resilience in the marketplace. Something I doubt will happen anytime soon.

And the world will continue to spin, largely as it always has. People with good business models will continue to thrive and people with poor models will continue to struggle, albeit with premium domains in weird extensions...

    I saw that on Network Soutions . . .

I thought the same thing, who on earth would use these, but then I saw these - and these are just some of them:

.apartments .build .builders .casa .condos .estate .forsale .haus .home .homes .house .immo .immobilien .land .lease .luxe .maison .mls .mortgage .place .properties .property .realestate .realtor .realty .reit .rent .rentals .studio .villas

I am SURE Realtors will love these and then there's a ton of others coming, like these related to different professionals:

.accountant .accountants .actor .airforce .archi .architect .army .associates .attorney .broker .career .careers .ceo .consulting .contractors .cpa .dds .democrat .engineer .engineering .esq .expert .guru .heart .help .law .lawyer .mba .navy .plumbing .repair .republican .tools .training .vet .work .works

pretty cool, but just my .02
