Struggling to generate income from a website

I run a video game website and been posting unique reviews and news for 4 years now. The site receives an average of 100k visits each month and around 60k of the hits are unique visits. It has active presence in social networks such as Facebook, G+, Twitter and YouTube, and posting review/news articles every single day. But when it comes to generating money from the site, it's been really poor. We've tried putting Google Adsene and not managed to earn more than $20 a month. LinkShare and Amazon affiliate programs have also been ineffective. Any advice on how to increase the earnings from this site?

Highly appreciate your expert opinions.

    Create a list.

If you get 60k uniques per month, you could easily get 500–1000 subscribers per month if you offer valuable reason to join your list (excellent give away of exclusive content).

You can then promote affiliate offers to that list or sell solo ads to it.

If you have a gaming offer (a guide or something similar) that gives you for example $20 profit per sale, you can probably sell them with 1-3% conversion rate to that list.

If you mail them valuable content with affiliate links for example 3 times a week (12 times a month) you could make $700 first month, $1,400 next month, etc.

What kind of 'list' are you referring here? By subscribers, did you mean registered users?

I believe he means e-mail subscribers, i.e., building an e-mail subscriber list and doing e-mail marketing.

You could start with sending out a simple e-mail when you post a new post, or something.

People who opt-in to your email list by subscribing at your webpage. By optin in they are saying to you: yes, please send me more valuable information via email

Your site could be attracting young users who don't have spending power. What are the demographics like? From that, you can then find related product or services to promote. But it will be real hard to monetise if you have all teenagers visiting your site.

Most of the visitors are from USA, Canada and Europe. And their age group is around 16-26. But these visitors do buy lots of games. If you consider sites like Gamestop or Gamergate, their targeted users are mostly teenagers. Their benefit is that they sell games, and we're on the other hand only providing content.

So, you do have the solution of making money. Start selling games. I know you may not be a game developer but you can still sell them becoming an Amazon affiliate. Adsense integration can be another option for you to make money.

I saw your site, you want to make money but it hardly seems you are promoting anything. You should be knowing that PS4 pre-orders already started. This could be golden time for any video game website.

Try following tips, I don't know what are their chances to convert but you'll never know without trying.
    - Join Amazon Affiliate Program get PS4 Pre-Order affiliate link from Amazon. Create few beautiful banner ads for PS4 and rotate them to see which converts best.
    - Buy Amazon Store Plug-in and create a store for your website, and pull gaming stuffs from Amazon.
    - After reviewing any game tell your visitor, game is available on your store for discount price. Provide link to game on your store.

If you are using WP try using Adrotate Free Plug-in to rotate ads.
Few other tips if your website is WP based,
    - Use Easy Fancy Box Plug-In for images
    - Increase font size a little
    - Try to keep lines per paragraph less than 4

PS4 is on its way, figure out how you gonna promote it, this is kind of opportunity no video game marketer should miss.

Only couple weeks back I took out the Amazon PS4 pre-order ad, because even after keeping it on for 6 months we got nothing from it. But I like your idea for an Amazon Store Plug-in. Our site isn't WP based. Is it compatible for sites made by CakePHP?

Cuie is right. A list is your best option considering it is a gaming site. Part of the problem is that gaming can generate a lot of traffic, but sucks at conversion. Once you create a list, offer as much free info as possible. Since a lot of the people that subscribe to your list probably wont have much money, you could try directing them to a content locking page or using a survey offer. Of course you can always try to get them to convert on affiliate offers, but your conversion will be low. Try free stuff to start, then move to affiliate offers.

I noticed you put a lot image banner, u might want to text link. Usually image banner don't convert well because the user already know that is an ads.

Lots of good suggestions already. I'll add that there are tons of gaming cheats ebooks on Clickbank. Maybe review one occasionally and if you get one that people like, create your own version that's better. There are also a lot of CPA offers for gamers.

Have you contemplated building your list?

What are your source of traffic?

Are they targeted, buying keywords or just broad?

Things like Amazon convert best with text links which is probably why it has been ineffective.

Have you tried promoting gaming CPA offers? You could look for high converting offers best related to your site then rotate and split test different offers.

When you used Adsense, how many clicks were you averaging per day? I guess the CPC must be very low.

  • I cannot believe that you haven't built a list or turned your site into a subscibers site? With that many visitors you should be making a great full time income by now.

The suggestion you recieved to add an opt in autoresponder box offering something of real value for free in order to build a list is a good one, but also consider telling your readers the site will soon become a membership subscription only site as those who really like what you write will pay a nominal few dollars a month to access it? Test say $17/month or ask what they will be willing to pay if you like?

This is easy to do using WordPress which I think you said you are using? You have been throwing money away for too long my friend. Attend to this matter and if monotizing your site allow a few weeks for your readers to adjust to the change as those who leave probably wouldn't have purchased anything from you even if on a mailing list?

Consider switching in the NewYear maybe while adding an opt in box right away? It is far better to have 2000 paying readers than 60K-100K who earn you zero? The numbers will soon rise again if you continue giving good content.

    Regards,

    Stephen & Jennifer.

Great site. Good job. I think the killer content images are completely kicking your ad images in the behind. I don't think any 16 to 26 year old is going to click on a boring ad when the site is flashing gamer related images at them.

Private ad sales are my suggestion.

Create a page on your site called Advertise. Share these stats on that page, with you contact info, and advertising options for monthly and annual advertising.

Then, cold call some companies, and send emails as well, that might want to advertise. Think not just gaming but tertiary interests. Get creative on these ideas.

Remember that diversifying is the best way to earn, and try out listbuilding and the Amazon affiliate program as well.

So many options. The paid membersip option is golden.. consider it seriously, very seriously.

Start using an autoresponder and 'test' every cpa offer game. Invite everyone on your list at least 3 times to join you in game and add you in their clan, gang, tribe or whatever... with that much monthly traffic you could easily earn 2-3k monthly next month.

Thanks for replying everyone. I can't quote so many posts, so I'll simply reply here.

List: Yes, I didn't make any list. First few months when I tried sending newsletters to my registered users, I got warning from my hosting providers. If you know any good site/service that I can use to send newsletters, please suggest.

Image Banner: Since all you saying image banner is an issue, I'll switch to text. I hope this will be effective.

And, our traffic source is mostly Google, direct and other social networks. Like I've said, we post content in the site every day and share them in other social networks. So traffic has always been good. But our Alexa ranking has never improved. I honestly don't know why. Probably because Alexa is a crap. Because I know sites don't have 5% content and traffic like us and has a few million higher ranking than us. Which is ridiculous. And many CMP for Gaming sites won't give us ads because we have a poor Alexa ranking.

If any of you willing to take charge of this operation since I don't understand monetizing too well, I'll give you a good share from the income. PM me if you are interested or email me directly to ron(at)noobfeed.com. I'll gladly accept any good offer as long as it doesn't include anything offensive.

If you are looking a joint venture partner, you should post an offer here also: Warrior Joint Ventures

IMO I think building an e-mail list would be the easiest and least stressful thing for you to do with your site (Not to say that it'll be easy). Look up autoresponder services on Google. Most people use aweber but it can be expensive, especially if you have an audience that large. Build a list and review gaming products or have giveaways, etc. draw their attention and pull them in, then market the products to them

I recommend CPA. I know Peerfly is offering a World of Tanks free trial and every conversion is $1 or more. That isn't all... there are tons of gaming offers. Takes some time to weed through them as many of them are gambling, but there are plenty in your niche that I think would convert well on a site like yours.

For a gaming website, CPA is in my own opinion and experience by far the easiest and best method of monetizing. Plus, like someone above suggested, build a list!

Like these two said, you could also have pretty good success with some Peerfly offers, they have some good gaming offers.

It would be a joyous occasion if the solution was to simply build a list -- seemingly the answer to every problem here on WarriorForum! haha

Assuming it's the site in your sig..... The site as-is seems pretty lackluster (I wanted to back out 3 seconds after I saw it), but you've got a foundation to build off of if it's getting 60k uniques per month. You just need to raise your production value until the site reads and looks at least semi-professional. Four years is a long time to work on a project and have nothing come of it. Either push it to the next level or move on from it.

Your inability to monetize the site is tied directly to this stuff.
