The level of quality. Not finding a dependable writer. Wasting your time and money trying to get services done too cheaply.

Cheap is no good as many here stated. I know someone who is a talented writer and he is not me. PM me if you are interested.

Honestly, some writers in the Philippines can work well at this rate and can do a decent job. I am a writer in the US, so I have a stake in not saying that, but that can be the truth.

I highly recommend that you be cautious. It is extremely difficult to find someone that can perform high-quality work that is impeccable enough to come from a non-native English background, and still works for those kind of rates.

I recommend that you pay more if you can, even if only another $100, if you're going to go with a writer in the Philippines. During their training, have them sign up for the About.com Grammar course via email, read the posts on AllIndieWriters' freelance writing blog for ESL writers, and that they read regular work inside AND outside of your niche to get familiar with tone.

Even then, you will want to MINIMUM use a proofreader's services that is native, and a copyeditor would be best. If you can only pay a little more, you might be able to find the right match of providers.

I urge you to consider that quality content has a journalistic element, however, and that means phone interviews. It is unlikely that you are going to get interviews at a low rate, in any country. It is unlikely that you'll get good .gov/government-sourced credible data/statistics and research to edify your content. If you can train in these things well, you could hire a PT employee from the Philippines, and do well. While you don't necessarily need to be a journalist to do this, you might want to do some research yourself.

Another idea to this? You could ask a writer you can't afford permanently for one hour of their time to distill these ideas in a phone call you record and send the file to the would-be employee.

Or you could avoid the intensive circus in all likelihood the hiring on a non-native English speaker that doesn't command higher fees for their commensurate abilities in trainings to write professionally in English, and you could just hire someone for a better price.

If you want to spend about the same amount you've planned, but can't do the training/other described measures, you do have two good options: buy quality PLR and add interviews, stats, and personality to the content, or go with less content but extremely high quality.

Sorry for writing you a book, but my unique experience as having hired and trained a writer from the Philippines and being a journalist and content writer myself made me compelled to offer the fullest two of my cents.

for a writer who delivers quality at low prices...

It's not 'impossible', but be prepared to put in time
and effort finding one who will work at lower rates.

...going over samples.

...and if they ARE good, are they consistent.

Can they deliver content on a timely basis and will
the quality hold up?

Are they reliable?

There are other factors you have to consider out-
side of "Great content at cheap prices".

Sometimes, the content maybe GREAT but he/she
is a slacker and have troubles delivering on time.

Sometimes the content maybe sub-par, but you
get fast work.

Paying low prices for content will, in most cases,
get you what you pay for.

So you'll find what you're looking for if you look
hard enough, but usually, if they're good AND
consistent, they will charge fair market price.

So, you're that fcuking good you can train them. Why the hell are you advertising to employ writers then? Just do it yourself.

BTW, quality writers DON'T need to be TRAINED.


You go with the best, however much it costs. Is your business worth that? Or do you want to be second rate, because you've employed second rate writers?

Personally I would not directly hire a part time or full time writer in the filippines or anywhere else. I would just go to variuos writer platforms such as iwriter and other freelance platforms. You can get reaaaal value for your money on elance, especially odesk and on freelancer.

If you've changed of mind and want to spend a little more then just hire a reputable writer here on WarriorForum.

Going for real quality will definitely pay off in the long run...

I would be curious to know how much output you expect under the umbrella of 'part time' or 'full time'. My guess is that expectation can vary drastically and what different writers can crank out in a given time varies drastically (unless there's some kind of rule of thumb for that).

Maybe a better approach is looking at exactly how many articles, with x amount of words per article etc. you actually need and then hire based on that.

Yikes! Anyone that you have to train is not worth your time or your money. Think about it -- you're hiring someone to do specialized work for you. If YOU know more about it than THEY do, there's something very, very wrong. I wouldn't hire a personal chef and then spend a month teaching him how to cook :p

Look for someone who has the right education/professional background/credentials. If you hire someone who's truly talented, they *can* be profitable right away.

And, no, I'm not saying this because I'm a writer... I'm saying this because I'd hate to see you waste your time, energy, and money on someone who's likely going to come up short.

You'll try many, lose a lot of time and energy into that direction only to look at the results a month, three or six later and see it's been a bad choice. You would need someone to trust, to partner up with, and in my experience, that really is the case with Philippines or Bangladeshi writers.
But I have had the opposite as well, managed to work with an Indian writer who has been more than great, content wise.
I certainly believe that the same quality of work would have cost me twice or more with an Eastern writer but if you set your mind to pay a little more in a "world" of cheap Philippiness writers, you might find someone reliable. I did.

I have seen people hiring "cheap" writers from those places, having spend time TRAINING them and then, after delivery of sub-par articles, they still had to manually edit and correct the articles for hours afterwards...and those people still thought they got a deal

So..to answer your question..what could go wrong is that you spend your money and then still have to spend time, your time, when you get articles back you cannot even use.

A lot of Filipinos have a good command of the English language. Training them is a good idea not because they are not good. It is a good idea because it helps them identify the writing style you would like them to apply in the articles you want them to write.

The worst possible thing that could happen is not finding a reliable person. There are a lot of people out there, not only in the Philippines but in general, that have the skills but not that reliable.

you need to 1st decide what is the purpose of the article..if it is SEO, then the writer should be familiar with keyword usage and other parameters.

If the article needs to be content based, then hire somone who is an expert in that niche

Everything will go wrong.

Regardless what your goal with your content is, you're better off hiring an excellent writer and getting 2 to 4 articles for your $175.

My preferred writer outsourcing is hiring college/grad students. They write papers and have access to the best research in the world. I've done this many times and it's the best content I've ever paid for. Much better than any online writing services I've used.

What could go wrong?

Whatever service or website you're running will fall into the cesspool of poor quality that millions of others share because of crap content.

From a writer's perspective who has done $1/100 word work, it's a tad difficult to get overly eager to craft perfection at that price. Especially when a lot of cheap clients want you to include "pictures" "headings" and a list of special requirements.

Here's what you'll get for a cheap price:

#1 - Spun content.
#2 - Clearly copy/pasted content from sources like Wikipedia. Some people don't even bother removing the sources...
#3 - Unreliable writers who disappear or never do your work.
#4 - Middleman cheap writers who are offering your work to other writers for an incredibly cheap rate. However, most of those people don't pay the writers they employ, they instead collect samples or just flat out don't pay them. I wouldn't worry too much about this though, the quality they get from those writers is about the same.

So are people lazy? Well sure... people by nature can be lazy and lack ambition. However, it's tough to expect anyone to spend more than 5-10 minutes on article you're paying them $3.50 to $5 for.

I'm a writer, but I also have employed people from the Philippines and India. In my experience, American/Australian and British (English) writers were the hardest working people I had ever met. Why so many corporations think they can get quality work for cheap is baffling to me.

Here's my general experience hiring from India and the Philippines:

- People would flat out just copy stuff from Wikipedia (some of them seriously didn't even put in the effort to remove the sources) [1][2][3]... and so forth.
- They would work whenever they wanted and their hours were very slim. They would work for half an hour and then just go to sleep or disappear for a few days. I've noticed the same trend happening in Columbus at some of the agencies downtown. People from India come to the US to work, and they clock out whenever they want, work whenever they want or just simply do whatever they like until fired.
- The work usually would need to be re-done and clients were pissed once they saw the quality.
- No matter what standards or guidelines you set for them, they won't read it. They spend a lot of their time hopping from site to site pasting a copy/paste message to every single job they can apply to. I can't tell you how many times I put out ads with "DO NOT PUT DEAR HIRING MANAGER IN THE TITLE OR I WON'T READ IT" and it had absolutely no effect what so ever... the majority of them still opened with it.

Seriously, if you can't afford to have quality content written, then write it yourself. I know the dream is to hire cheap workers, train them to craft perfection and to make quality content but it doesn't work that way, contrary to what people have been told.

Let's just say I learned my lesson real quick when I tried hiring for cheap and I do it all myself now.

Besides, what do people do with cheap content now days? It's not like the good ol days when you just spammed the crap out of the web with filler content and beat out search terms you had no business ranking for. I'm actually glad Google has changed for the better and realizes how important quality content is. However, most cheap clients haven't adapted to the changes and are still delusional in thinking they can just write out cheap filler content and rule the web.

What could go wrong?

Simply put: Everything can and will go wrong if you go with that approach.

I wish I still had the article this woman sent me on repairing automobile windows. The article was supposed to be about having your windows repaired and I went through the entire process.

I went through interviews, she had perfect English, she seemed reliable, etc. Then, I got the article and it was too bad to even fix with editing. It was so bad, there's no way even spinning software could produce something that bad. I used to save the article just to show people what kind of quality they're getting at a cheap price but it appears I have lost it.

Instead of getting like 50 articles for that amount of money get high quality 20 articles which will benefit you more. Try peopleperhour.com I found some good writers on there (really good)

the hard part is finding a good writer. the time you waste training them you could have done the work yourself.

I agree with what the other people have written here. I would start with iwriter. The prices there are very affordable and you can go for higher rated writers when your budget allows.

If you have a problem with the quality of the article you can reject it and have another writer write it. You can also hire the same writer again if you like them.
