Purchasing an email list

I just started a local Groupon style site, and I wanted to know if anybody had ever purchased an email list to market to and what kind of results you got. We are adding subscribers, but it is going a little slower than I would like.

If you buy a email list, think of the following:

    1. How old is this list 1day or 10years
    2. How many people before you this list was sold to
    3. Is this list interested into what you are going to offer them
    4. If this list is live (no fake emails and no 10 years old subscriptions) - how many people will report you for spam.

Rules of marketing to purchased mailing lists are different from rules of marketing to your own subscribers.

I would never buy email lists simply because it's not right and ethical. Would you want your email being sold to someone else? And there's a very great risk to get reported as a spammer.

Don't buy lists, they're usually bogus and outdated. I would try to find someone selling solo ads in your specific niche, but be careful, make sure the solo ad provider is legit...

You might also do some research on companies that might be compatible with your niche and negotiate a price to have them email there list with a link to your website... just a thought

I've already done this, don't buy a list. Take the time to build one. You'll get much better results in the long run.

That's what I thought, but the number of emails and the relatively low cost made it look enticing. We've added about 200 legitimate emails to our list in the first 3 weeks, I was just hoping to find a quick way to bump that number so we can improve sales.

People you signed up to, are interested into your services and info you have promised to send them.
While email owners you are going to purchase never signed an agreement with you, so they are not expecting to get your emails.

What are you doing with unsolicited emails? I personally ignore them, others send them to spam.
Don't expect they do the other actions.

    Hi,

If you have a spending budget then see if you can find someone
within the same niche as you who may be able to send out an ad
to their customers or allow you to place an ad on their website in
    exchange for a monthly fee.

If you can find blog owners who get decent amounts of targeted traffic
to their sites every single month then try approaching them and see
if you can strike a deal.

At least this may speed up the process of adding more leads into your
    business.

    Hope this helps

  • If you buy a list most companies will not let you import it like aweber. Also you have no relationship with the people whos' list you bought. Also some people are going to be very very pissed if they figure out their email was sold. You might have some other legal problems is there was no TOS saying it can be sold so you are maybe running into those problems from passed on to you from the person who collected the emails in the first place. My my opinion it's always better to generate the email optin yourself then to buy it, not the answer people like to hear but it's true.

I've done it before and my account got closed it's not worth the hassle luckily I broke even on what I spent to purchase the email list...

Like Joan said purchase ads not email lists whether it'd be solo ads, facebook ads, pay per click ads, banner ads..

I would be cautious when purchasing an email list. I have only ever heard bad experiences of banned autoresponders and spam warnings.

I would recommend just starting your own list from scratch. It may take a little longer in the beginning but the results will be well worth it.

You can do this quickly if you incorperate FB into the mix.

There are plenty of threads here check out the offline section also

    Hope this helps

Just to make sure you're on the safe side, write a simple email and have whoever is selling you this send out to the list to see the open rate, etc.

Just to get a feel of what you're buying....
