Can Someone Please Explain this to Me?

Okay, color me ignorant, but I'm trying to write an article about Facebook Apps, and for the life of me I can't figure out exactly what one is. I get plenty of Google results talking about them, but none explaining them.

I feel ridiculous. Obviously they are popular and a lot of people know about them, but I'm clueless right now! Could someone please give me a quick explanation?

    Are you on FaceBook? If so, you've probably encountered a FaceBook application.

    The basic functions of FaceBook are the social networking things like your profile, photos, friends, status, and messages. Pretty much everything else is an add-on application that someone has written to work within the FaceBook framework.

    All of the FaceBook games are applications. Things like "Cities I've Visited" are FB apps, as are things like the "Lil Green Patch" widget that lets you exchange little garden icons with friends and contribute toward saving the rainforest.
