Tomorrow i'm buying my first non-free domain name, and i was thinking of using Godaddy for buying the domain and hosting it, the $15 unlimited plan comes with an autoresponder, but i know everybody around here swears by Aweber...is the Godaddy gadget good enough? or do i gotta have Aweber...any thoughts on any of this, suggestions? Hints?

I'm not sure about Aweber, but I don't like Godaddy as a registrar. Do you need to have your domain at the same place your host is? I know its easier like that, but I like to keep my host and my domains at seperate places. For instance most of my domains are with moniker, they offer a good price on most gTLD's and I have a seperate webhost with CIRTEX.

    Hope that helps.

Most hosting plans offer free autoresponders. The problem is, they only send out a single message. In other words, they aren't set up to capture double (or single) opt-in subscribers or send out a series of follow-up messages.

Of course, it all depends on what you need an autoresponder for (you didn't say). I've been able to use free autoresponders from my hosting account to deliver useful one-time only messages - but not to capture and compile useful email marketing lists. Again, it depends on what you need.

One domain is sufficient for all that and much more.

Most here would probably advise you to skip GoDaddy and go with NameCheap for your domains. NameCheap also offers hosting, but the general advice is to never buy hosting from the same place you buy domains. I use Noah Fleming's membership and hosting. I think he has an offer in the classified section of this forum. The best value for me.

In my opinion, and I have lots of opinions, get your autoresponder from GetResponse. They offer a limited free version that can get you started and if you have a large list someday, they are a lot cheaper than the other one...Aweber.

You can learn a lot without spending a dime. Plenty of free information is available and there are nice people who would be glad to help you.

This kinda depends on how big you want your business right off the bat. As an established affiliate that works with list building I use namecheap for domain name buying, hostgator for hosting (I'm on a dedicated but you don't need to be on one right now). And I use aweber for mailing. Aweber is easy to use and easy to set up. They handle all of the ip rotations and spam compliancies so that I don't have to worry about them. I don't know what godaddy will handle but you should consider starting your business off on the right foot!

You may not even need to worry about list building right now unless you want to focus on that from the beginning. I suggest focusing on getting other things down and established before jumping in to list building. However...as someone who is established listbuilding is VERY profitable in the end.

I haven't used Godaddy for an autoresponder so i can't really say if its good or bad. I do however use Aweber and I really like all that it offers. It's very easy to use and it walks you through setting everything up which is nice. I have bought all of my domains through Godaddy though an I find them to be a great domain provider.

As far as needing more than 1 domain, no you do not. You can put each of those things on different pages or even on subdomains of your main domain. This is what I have done with a number of my sites. Godaddy allows you to set up I think like 90 something subdomains, so I think this is the way to go.

    Hi Achilles

I have been using the hosting at thirdspherehosting.com for years with great success. They include what they call an automation station that allows you to

create unlimited products and sell them through many different merchant providers

create as many mailing lists as you like

develop an autoresponder series for every list

    includes a complete affiliate program

    ad tracking for ad campaigns

etc etc - and then it integrates all that to work seamlessly together

it is 24.95/mth but after you add up your cheaper hosting at say, hostgator and your basic aweber acct. you pay more than that anyway and it is a great place to start because you have everything in one place.

I have used them since 2001 and can testify that their support is excellent as well.

The one drawback is they only give you 500 megs of space and if you exceed that they chg. you another 24.95/mth for another 500 megs although most sales sites don't ever exceed that.

    Hope that is helpful,
    Vince

Yes, NEVER host your domain and web site(s) with the same hosting company.

As for GoDaddy, well a lot of Internet marketers say that they are not IM friendly and would never use them. I don't know - but there is an old adage - 'there is no smoke without fire'. So make your own decision.

As for web hosting, there have been a lot of companies suggested and some I have used and others I still use, so most of them appear sound. Again, only you can decide - Google some review sites and look at some of the posted options in this thread, before you make your decision.

As for the autoresponder, I would use a paid service, rather than a script, but's that's my opinion.

One domain is enough - but if it is a "good one" try to by the .com, and .net at least. Get the .biz and your country suffix too (such as .co.uk) if you can afford to. You can point them all to your main domain. This helps prevent people buying and pionting a popular similar domain to a stolen clone of your main website.

I can expand here for hours, as could many others, but the above are my quickest thoughts.

      Regards,
      Jeff.

So nobody likes those inexpensive .ws (Western Samoan) domains?

Inexpensive? I guess that depends on where you buy them. If you buy them from the "usual" place they're $10 a month (but come with an attractive multi-tier affiliate program). That's hardly inexpensive when I can get a .com for around $7 a year (I have a domain reseller account) and your "average" internet user can get the same .com for less than $10 a year through NameCheap.

To answer the original question, I'd stay as far away from GoDaddy as possible if you plan on doing any kind of email marketing or affiliate marketing with your website. Also keep in mind GoDaddy's server configurations are a bit "odd" and it causes compatibility problems with a lot of popular web scripts.

For domain names, I usually either go through my own reseller account or NameCheap. For hosting I recommend HostGator's "Baby" plan. At $10/month (or as low as $7.95/month if you pay a year in advance) you can host as many add-on domains as you want and you get "unmetered" disk space and bandwidth so you have plenty of room to grow.
