How to upload site folder and recover Wordpress blog?

Hi guys,

I've backed up my old WP site using Filezilla. Can anybody show me how I can now upload these files onto a new WP site to retrieve all settings/plugins?

Thanks!

Taking a file backup of your WordPress site is only half of the steps you need.

All the content and settings are contained in the WordPress database.

I asked elsewhere and got a similar reply.

Can you show me/link me to a tutorial where I can also backup the database?

      Thanks a lot!

Do you use hostgator or a host that uses cpanel. If so, they have tools built in that you can use. Hostgator has tutorials on their site

Export your database from PHP My Admin
Create a new database in your new cPanel using Database Wizard, write down the database name, user and password - give the user all permissions.
Go into Php My Admin and import your old database into the new.
Upload your backup files, edit wp-config with the details you wrote down.
Provided you've moved the domain to your new hosting that should be it!

Hi, sorry if these questions are basic (probably are) but I've never done any serious programming/website development before:

      1) Where is PHP myadmin?
      2) Where is cPanel and how do I create a database?
      3) where is wp-config

      Thanks for answering my questions.

Sounds like I'll have to learn a few things about Wordpress.
How long does the process take? Would it just be easier to make the 'duplicate' website from scratch?

    Appreciate all the help everyone!

If you've not been backing up your database, the easiest way to get a database backup is by using a backup plugin, you can get a free one from the plugin section of wordpress.org. But you will need access to the original website.

If you want a more refined solution which will move the entire site, including settings, content - the lot. There are some commercial plugins. The cheapest I've found is Robert Plank's backup creator - backupcreator.com at $7 for a single site license. I have and use a copy and it works well. You will still need to access the original website.
