Hi,
just starting out with my web/dev/design business.

Basically, i'm a beginner in business and actual web dev and design.
But i'm now at the stage where i am ready to take on customers orders[well.nearly]..lol

I can now build and structure a website that the client wants, but my question is this...Sorry if they sound stupid as i am still learning... When i get a sale, does the client then buy their own domain name and web hosting and link it to the site i just built,or do i do it all for them??? Im thinking obviously they will have to use their bank details to fill out the forms on Go Daddy,or hostgator for the domain names and hosting and that is obviously private to them.

What if they have no clue about hosting and domain names???

Very confused...

It doesn't really sound like you are ready. You may know how to build a website but you need to learn some more about business if you are going to take on clients. Once you get a bad reputation it is very difficult to build a good one again. Your question above is just one of the things you need to figure out, it is up to you how you deal with this. You could do videos showing your clients how to get hosting, where to get hosting. You could easily explain it, it isn't rocket science. Sorry if I sound harsh but considering you are selling websites this seems like something you really should have your own answer to.

  • There are a number of ways around this.

    1. When you acquire a new client that needs a website built, introduce the concept of registering a domain name and a web hosting account. If they are not familiar with it, explain it to them. Now here they might think you are trying to make more money from them by taxing them "monthly" for hosting and "yearly" for a domain name but you can then explain to them that you do not provide that kind of service. That you would recommend you go to a reputable website hosting and domain name provider. Give them the reasons why and help them set it up. Make a video tutorial of you signing up to these services once and you can show the same video to them over and over.

    2. You can explain the same thing above, except instead of sending them to another company, you can offer to host their website for them and register a domain name. Their website can be managed by the same person who built the website and sometimes that is more comforting to the client. You can do this by simply registering as a private label reseller of web hosting and domain names and simply offering the service to them as you would your web design/dev service; except you will charge them monthly for it. What a private label reseller allows you to do is sell the hosting and domain name service under your own brand but everything else is managed by the original hosting and domain name company. A simple Google search will reveal reputable companies that you can work with.

This can be done several ways:

    1. You could include the hosting/domain as part of your designing package (either part as the package total or as a monthly maintenance fee or like something that the site updates for x months are included) with enough overhead to cover your costs + profile.

    2) You can purchase a reseller package from a web host where you can place your new design sites with like #1 a fee of some kind.

    3) Have the client purchase hosting and domain on their own and have you upload the completed hosting to their new hosting.

You can also have a three pricing packages with the above 3 as an template for your business as well.

Have you given any though of the type of person you will be selling to mostly and with a little research you answer may be clear based on that.

If you have any more questions let me know and I will try to help where I can.

Yes, I agree with the 3 options listed above as well. The explanatory videos are an excellent idea, and you will be able to use them over and over again...If you host them publicly on YouTube as well, you might even get more clients that way!

What people most appreciate is honesty. Some people might already know how to buy a domain name, set up hosting, etc., whereas others may not...You will discover that people have varying degrees of knowledge and skills, and depending on how busy they are, they might be very grateful at the opportunity to have you handle everything for them, so that they don't have to!

If you offer different packages showing the different prices, they will be more likely to understand the differences and benefits amongst them all and will be less likely to feel scammed and more likely to trust you.

    This^

Depending on your registrar it should be no problem transferring hosting and domain into your customers name.

Who sells a web site without a domain?

Providing design services on someone else's hosting is not the same as building a website and selling it.

What a brilliant, appropriate signature link you have. God moves in mysterious ways.

    Good luck. You'll need it.
