I Quit And Now I'm Back With Two Tips If You Are Starting An Online Business

This is pretty embarrassing, I have been lurking around the Warrior Forum and other IM forums since 2004, and now almost ten years later I am finally earning an online income. I remember when I first started reading about marketing online, everything was so fascinating and the hardest thing to do was focus on one thing. This lack of focus basically is one of the things that eventually made me leave it all behind and quit taking action. I say quit taking action because I have continued to lurk on the forums for years.

I want to share 2 things that have helped me make a come back and start taking action in the past couple of months.

1) Focus on one thing first:
This probably sounds like beating a dead horse but it is so true. I don't want to set any rules and I know that many people advise on how you should focus on selling your own product, that's fine. However, I personally think that it is very important that you learn how to market online effectively first.

Learn how to build a list, copyrighting techniques, building a squeeze page, and starting as an affiliate is a great way to do this. One of two things can happen, you can become really good at marketing other people's products and make a nice living from it, or you can choose to create your own product later. The point is to start with one thing and become good at it.

You can have the best product in the world but it doesn't matter if you don't know how to market. You may decide to focus on providing a service or writing articles, but give it some time before deciding that you need to jump to something else. And be honest with yourself, don't say that you have done the best you can when things start getting difficult if you really haven't. Once you grasp one thing and are having success with it, by all means go ahead and try something else that will complement what you are doing.

2) Take action and don't be over analytical
It's okay to measure risk, but once you do that go ahead and take the risk. Do some research, read reviews, do whatever you have to do, but don't be afraid to stumble. This is probably even more important than my first point. Imagine this, I have been on the fence lurking IM forums since 2004 without taking any action. If you quit in the past or let me say better, took a break, and you really have a strong desire to market online and have had a chance to reflect on your past mistakes, make the come back. I am much better at picking and weeding out things now, than I was in the past.

That's it. These are the two things that I did not apply in the past, but I would love to hear what others can add to this list to help out the newbies.

Well done indeed Benny. Kudos to you for keeping going.

And I'm convinced you're exactly right. Focusing on one thing and becoming skilled at it is the one sure thing we should all be doing at the start.

However the reality is that people are lured by the ever present WSOs etc, and so flit from pillar to post getting nowhere fast.

Good post. I think one of the hardest things for most people - it was for me when I started - is to find that first thing to focus on. It's hard to nail down a good fit, and it really does seem like certain kinds of businesses fit different people better than others.

So I guess to add to what you've said, I just think it's important to do some upfront experimenting, trial and error, as you allude to in your 2nd point.

Number two is the thing that I get so stuck on.

I would read WF everyday, get my motivation, make up my mind that I would do something about my business....and I never did.

Only recently was I able to redirect my online career into something profitable.

Glad to see you're back. Good luck!

    Regards,
    JR John

There is no way it took you over 10 years to finally start making something online. You must have really not taken any action whatsoever

The thing that has crippled my progress the most is trying to be perfect and trying to have "all my ducks in a row" before taking action. Force yourself to move forward, set down some action steps that must be done everyday.

I understand the feeling. It's safer to start once "everything is perfect". But nothing is ever perfect. It's often better to start walking now and make a few bad turns along the way than to never start moving in fear of getting lost

We've all been there before. Half of you is wanting things to be perfect but the other half of you is delaying things because you know once something is live and out there, it will either succeed or fail. A lot of us perfectionists do so because we are scared of launching things and the chance they might fail. But the sooner you know something doesn't work the sooner you can fix it and have another go.

Agreed. I've even started posting blog posts when they are half done and just putting draft at the top. People just want good content, they don't care if there are spelling/grammar mistakes - especially when you are teaching people how to make money.

Nice post. Especially #2. I think a lot of new marketers get caught wanting to make everything perfect before they start on any thing else. Its just not that serious though... just get out there and take aaction... it'll come.

Great advice. Tip 1 is probably the hardest thing for newbies to overcome. So many promising opportunities and sales letters, it truly is difficult to focus on one thing when there are so many distractions.

Focusing on one thing while taking massive action is the fastest way I know to become successful.

    Wonderful sharing.

Yes, focus is the most important thing for Internet marketers, especially for newbies. There are so many WSOs every day, and they sell so many new methods to make money online, so it is difficult to focus on your own thing.

The problem with lingering around trying to find out how this all works is - everything keeps changing. What worked back then doesn't work now. Too many people are doing it the long expensive way. It is expensive because of all the money they could have made if they would have just jumped in -ignorance on fire ETC.

Yes find one thing that works (for you) and keep doing it.

The only way to learn is by 'Doing'. We learn by making mistakes and to keep re-adjusting.

Sounds like you were trying to figure this all out before you finally 'decided' to take some action. I am not trying to knock you here but too many people are doing the same thing - trying to get the ducks in line. The only problem? What works today, may change tomorrow. The only way to learn is by 'Doing'. Now. Learn 20% (Consuming). Act 80% Producing (acting on what you just learned)

Thanks for posting your tips, I'd add one: just don't buy everything you see!

There are temptations to buy every new shiny object there is - also here at WSO section - when you'd like something to buy - just make sure you'll actually use it!

I myself ended up with lots of products, guides, courses that I don't have any time to use or work with...and there are some good ones there. But... you know there are only 24 hours in a day and I need to be focused on the stuff I do, on the stuff I sell, on the stuff I produce
