This is wierd, but there may be possibilities

We've been beating our heads against the Internet marketing wall for about 7 years, trying to make a buck but getting it wrong and earning zip. In the process, we created about 25 web sites. Never did promote them correctly, just put them up and mostly hoped for the best.

Zip. Nada. Not much happened. Our fault. No real promotion smarts or talent. Nor, most importantly, no keep on keepn on. Stay with it. No hang in there. So we got what we deserved. Nothing. Stupid is as stupid does.

Within the past 3 months, I started getting referral emails from one of our hard-on pill sites. It's a legitimate pill. Not my cup of tea but, apparently, some guys like it. Problem is, we stopped paying for the site registration several years ago. It's still up but I havn't been back to the site in years.

The emails, with just the return email address, keep coming. At first, I said, what is this BS, go away. Then, I said to myself, self, you dumb ass, keep the emails with the return email address. This could be an email mailing list in the making.

So now, I'm up to about 116 return email addresses. I have no clue why these folks are sending me their email addresses. I don't want to ask Go-Daddy because I havn't paid for the site in three years.

My question is: do I try to contact these folks? With what question(s)? I have not established a relationship with any of these people so I don't feel comfortable trying to sell them something.

Some would say, 'its found money'. Others will say, 'if you don't have a product to offer them, wait until you have one'. And, others might suggest it's a fools errand, and just ignore the emails.

What do you think? Appreciate suggestions.

Wes

    T-bone,

I think your next action depends entirely upon what you plan to do. Do you want to create a business? Do you want to have a web site? If not, don't do anything, eventually the emails will stop.

But because you began this thread, I'm guessing you would like to try your hand again at Internet marketing?

You already know how to put up a web site and you understand the need to push or pull traffic to it.

Now what you need to do is
    • find a hungry audience,
    • learn what challenges/needs/wants/passions they have,
    • satisfy those challenges with a product/service or referral,
    • learn to drive traffic to the site.
It's not really too complicated but you'll basically be starting over from scratch. Since those emails came to you, it is possible that you could reply to each one based on their approach to you. But I'm guessing they may not remember sending you their email. In addition, they probably haven't given you permission to mail to them (I don't really know this based on what you said). If it were me, I wouldn't mail to them, especially since you don't know how targeted they really are. You should be able to get 116 fresh opt-ins fairly fast if you do your market research homework.

    The very best to you,

    Steve

It could be spam mails and answering spam emails may open the floodgates.

A couple of questions: Is there anything on the site. Sometimes sites stay up after expiration. If the site's not up, then I'd assume that you've been spammed. I don't know why someone would persist in sending you emails over 3 months though. Did you ever get leads from your site before?

You may have a legitimate list of 116 men interested in enhancement. Even if it was some kind of prank, at least 10% of those guys have thought about doing something to improve themselves. That's if they're legit emails.

If you are feeling a little adventurous, here's how you could start a business out of this.

1)Find an autoresponder that allows you to load your own prospects (imnica maybe)
    2) Find a plr email sequence on male growth (or you could write your own but that would take some time and effort) and load it into your AR
    3) Find some products that would interest your list and join the affiliate programs.
    4) Load in your prospects
    5) Begin mailing them your sequence and add in some affiliate links. The manufacturers may even provide you with an email campaign. (Hint: What guy wouldn't be interested in an email subject line reading "Your Girlfriend Told Me Something Embarrassing about You")
    6) Build your list by setting up a new site and feed it with traffic from youtube, facebook, and forums (hint: I understand a lot of bodybuilders are interested in this sort of thing!)

Your cost: $3 a month for an imnica or other low cost AR account (the first month is $1)
    $5-10 for an AR series
$10-15 for a few fiverr gigs to make short videos promoting your site or affiliate products.

The above is a very simple affiliate biz model that will work. At the very least, you have an interesting experiment.

Many thanks for your thoughtful responses. Got another dozen emails today. I don't know what, if anything, I'm going to do with this stuff. My wife and I are really turned off on online marketing. We really tried hard for several years, but nothing seemed to work for us. We finally gave it up as something we'll never really get.

About the only thing now that still holds out a possibility is self publishing on Amazon. Writing, for me, is very hard work. It requires the kind of self discipline I'm not sure I have.

As far as the emails are concerned, it's ironic. All the time and effort we spent trying to build lists and nothing. Now. out of sight, out of mind, a list is forming by osmosis. Strange. Thanks again.

My suggestion is to "Don't Take Action" with any email(s) that are from an unknown source. Rather, build a list of your own subscribers because it will be a list from a known source, i.e. your own list.

You want to use the unknown source email addresses to build a list and that is SPAM. You will be a Spammer, risk losing your reputation and possibly your website host if not more.

Maybe you should find a list of all the practices that we marketers do & do not do.

    Jeffery 100% :-)
