Average Email Marketing List Size Growing by 40% Per Year: Four Steps to Optimize Response | MarketingSherpa

That article says that your recorded open rates might be lower than they actually are, due to some HTML thingy in Gmail and Outlook.

Do you agree? Is that actually true?

Yes, it's difficult to get reliable tracking using the tokens in the emails autoresponders send out.

I rely more on the response and track through cloaking links. At least that shows the click through rate which is, perhaps, more significant than open rates.

I think most open rates would not be overly accurate but the best thing to use your open rate stats for is to compare which emails are getting opened more than others. So in this case it doesn't matter if the figures are a little off since they would all be off so you can still compare the open rate of one email to the next.

    1) The open rate is measured with the help of a tiny image (1x1 px). If the image isn't displayed, there's no open recorded. If the image is displayed, that means that the recipient has opened the message.

    2) Default settings in Gmail: images disabled

    1) + 2) => If a Gmail user doesn't change the default settings, then whether that user opens or not your message you won't see any difference. No image is displayed, therefore no open is recorded.
