Translating an Info Product to Portuguese - Good or Bad idea?

Hey everyone,

I have an information product in the MMO niche (more specifically, it has to do with eBay). I was considering translating it into Portuguese and reselling it to Portuguese/Brazilian people who prefer reading in their native language.

While this type of product has been done again and again in English, I was wondering if there would be any value in translating it. Brazil, being a huge emerging market, is the country I'm most trying to target.

I speak Portuguese fluently so I could easily make the translation myself without outsourcing.

So, good or bad idea?

PS: Been lurking for quite a while but this is my first post. It's been great learning from the very knowledgeable people in this forum.

    I think it could be a great idea if you are able to then connect with people that speak Portuguese. You'll still have to market it but if it sells well in English it may do the same in your language.

    I think that's a great idea. Non-English speaking markets could be somewhat untapped.

    It has been posted many times: just beacuse there is a huge population (number-wise) speaking a certain language... it doesn't mean you have an untapped market. Monolingual people are inclined to think so, but their opinion shouldn't be taken into consideration

    If 1 billion people speak XYZ langauge but only 1 million have internet and only 2% is willing to spend any money online - how big is your market?

    Things to research before doing anything:
    - internet usage of that population
    - their 'internet culture'; i.e. are they buying anything online or not (some cultures simply don't trust any American style sales pitch and don't buy anything online, even if they have money)
    - banking and credit card system in place and usage

    These are the most important factors you should study before starting the translation.

    Just an example: hundreds of millions of people speak Russian but there is not much money there to be spent on ebooks + there is a huge culture (read: encouraged behaviour) of hacking and not paying for anything online.

    When you say "have" do you mean that you created yourself?

    or do you mean one that you bought?

    If it's your product that you created then sure go ahead. But if it is one that you bought then obviously you need that owner's permission.

    Even if it's a product that you can be an affiliate for and promote I would still think you need the owner's permission.

    I'm Brazilian, even though I live in Greece.

    Since your ebook is about making money online, it will be successful.

    There are many Brazilian websites about internet marketing. This is a topic that interests everyone, and Brazilians are using the internet like Americans.

    Here in Greece only now people are waking up and using the internet…

    Good idea, SEO is generally easier with non-English languages.

    How about tapping into the Spanish market as well?

      Tapping into the Spanish market is something I'd love to do, but I don't feel my grasp of Spanish is good enough to make a valuable product to sell. I'm working on it, maybe in a year or so.

      I'll be posting the finished product on Brazil's version of Clickbank, as well as finding affiliates down there. I don't blog in Portuguese yet but I'm considering starting so that I can release the translated version in a month or two.
