Selling Websites and Timing

I've decided to sell off some of my websites so I can concentrate on other things. I was thinking of putting them on Flippa, but it occurred to me this is probably a bad time of year to sell.

Does anyone have any experience in this field? What is a good time to sell them? As Flippa seems to be the biggest, is it usually the best place to sell sites?

If you have any advice, thank you in advance!

I wouldn't say now is necessarily a bad time. As long as you don't schedule your auction to end on Christmas day or anything.

I'd recommended Flippa - it's by far the biggest marketplace and so will give you the best chance of getting the price you want.

I've got some flippa experience but not enough to know the seasonal cycle. I'd get on there and see recent sales. If there have been some sites similar to yours selling, why not go for it?

I would suggest cloning the sites before selling them and keeping a version in case you want to do something similar in the future or want to sell another one like it. A lot of flippers basically flip the same sites with different but relevant domains over and over. If you get a lot of interest, you know it might be worth selling some of the same kinds of sites.

Obviously, you'd need to make some significant changes before you used it for yourself again. But why start over from scratch if you've already done it before?

    Good Luck.

I have seen if your website is worth while if it gets some good traffic, can generate good income, or has very good content and layout, every period of year is golden period for you, i have seen a lot of crap sites made in couple of mins aimed for selling at flippa, but if there are quality sites which are pretty rare then they do stand out no doubt in that

Depends on the size of your site. I don't know much about seasonality on Flippa for <$10k sites, although I would imagine people buying at that level are part-timers so likely would not want to buy in the holiday period.

Serious buyers, however, are very active in December. It's usually our biggest month of the year and I'm sure most other decent brokers are the same. It is the end of the tax year for people in the US, so quite a few people look to buy websites to reduce their tax liability. Generally speaking, these people are looking to invest in the $50k+ range, so if your site is smaller than that then it may not be the best time to sell.

"Cloning" the site as suggested above is not a good idea at the higher end of the market, it will severely devalue the site. Serious buyers would expect a non-compete agreement or at least some evidence that you have no intention of selling the site and then competing with them straight away (having various sites in a niche and only selling one isn't going to be a good sign). If you're selling sites for $200 a pop it doesn't really matter and is probably a sensible strategy, but you need to think differently once you get into the $XX,XXX range.

I just sold 3 websites within the last couple weeks to different people using free classifieds on IM forums. They all sold within an hour of listing.

Price your site right, put it in front of buyers and if it is a good site you will move it.

We broker sites in the $2K - $100K range, although this is our first time doing so in December.

Our experience last year in Dec selling our own sites is in-line with what Thomas has said - lower value site sales decrease, but mid-high range portfolio investors are looking to spend some cash for tax savings.

It's an interesting look and insight into the different mindsets behind site buyers, heh.

If you are in a money and time crunch, this could be an excellent time to sell as many buyers are looking for a good deal and know that money crunched sellers will be out there trying to dump their sites fast, to generate Christmas cash. You might not need the money now, but you could make it seem that way and act as if you were going to charge more money for the site, but are giving a good deal (even if that price is not actually lower than you had intended to charge) and you might attract a bargain hunter who is willing to buy now rather than waiting.

It's not website specific but now would be an excellent time to sell a domain on Flippa.

Flippa has dropped the domain listing fees by 50%. Holiday Special: 50% Off Domain Listings | Flippa Blog | A blog about buying and selling websites, domains and apps.
