Exit pop-ups on sales page to capture leads?

I've got an idea for my sales page.

How's this idea sound? Will it work? Will the leads be good? Here it is:

I'll put an exit pop-up on my self-hosted Wordpress sales page.
When they try to exit the sales page, the pop-up comes up and offers them a free sample of the product or some other free bonus related to the offer.

This way, I capture leads from the visitors who don't buy the product.
They should be decent quality, because they're interested & possibly buyers.

Is this a good idea? Has anyone tried it?
I'll probably buy the Ninja Popups plugin ($18), it's the only plugin I could find that supports GetResponse. It seems to have lots of good features as well.
If anyone's used that plugin, I'd also like to hear your opinions on it.

Thanks!

Yea, except for all the people online that hate pop-ups and will probably never return to your site again.

To me this really depends on what type of website you have and what you're selling. If it's an IM product than most people are used to seeing that second page with a free offer and won't take offense. Some people even click back on the browser to see what the free offer is or if they can get a cheaper price. Other niches I'm not so sure about.

I'm in the Kindle niche, and the traffic will be coming from email marketers in the Kindle niche, who often promote products to them.

The traffic will be used to buying online products.
I'm not sure if the free bonus will turn them off. I think that it would help because they're getting something for free rather than nothing, but I'm not positive.

Yes you are definitely right, I my self don't like exit pop ups, it's makes feel annoying and user can quit visiting the site forever. So I avoid exit pop ups.

So, should I not add in an exit popup?

Since the traffic will be coming from email marketers, I doubt that they'd be going to the link more than once. It's a sales page, not a site they'll be frequently visiting.

The large amount of leads I get onto my email list may be worth much more to me than the few sales leads I don't get (if I even do lose any sales at all...)

Is there another alternative to capture leads from the people that don't buy my product instead of using exit popups?

      Thanks

Also, I'm not the experienced one here.
Has anyone ever used exit popups on their sales page? Please let me know!

I suggest you test and track the results. We can give you our opinions, but you will only know what works best if you try the different approaches and see what results you get. Every audience, every niche, every web site is a little different - this isn't "one size fits all."

        Good luck to you,

Hi, the exit popups are annoying. All the "Gurus" use them to offer OTOs (Upsell or Downsell One Time Offers) Not good if for your Personal Sales page.
My suggestion is to Create a form thru an Autoresponder Service and place it on your website. Offer Something Free to Join your List or Newsletter.
If your offer is decent the signups will come and your Business is more professional also.
Hope this gives you the alternative you asked for.

Exit pops are appropriate in certain circumstances.

If I'm paying for traffic? Bet your boots I'll have an exit popup. (As long as it's allowed).

Yes, I often use popups on my sales pages to capture leads. However, if you have JV partners sending you traffic then you better be hard coding those emails with their cookies or you might have some pissed off partners.
