Can tell someone tell me what I need to do to handle a major spike in traffic soon?

Hey guys,

As above.

I'm collaborating with this guy who has like a million likes on his Facebook page. And everytime he shares my blog on the page, I get an internal server error message. We've been trying for days now and it just doesn't work.

I'm running on Hostgator, the Hatchling Plan.

I also signed up for the free plan for Cloudflare and also installed Wordpress Supercached plugin, as suggested by Hostgator themselves.

Yet, it's still not working!

Can someone help me out? I'm willing to pay for a VPS, but I don't want to overspend. It seems like there're so many levels on Hostgator VPS thing.

Thanks.

    Hi,
In most cases involving bandwidth, it is the graphics overload
    that is pulling the bandwidth.

If you have a lot of graphics in JPEG then you need to
find a program to convert them to GIF format.

GIFs load almost instantly and you pull very little bandwidth.
This may not be your problem, but in most cases with bandwidth
    overload it is.

Hope this helps. Oh, stay with Hostgator ... it is not them
as their bandwidth capabilities are better than almost any other service.
Upgrade from "Hatchling" to the next level package for more depth of
    page service.

    Hope this helps,
    Carey

I've been a Webmaster for years and used to be a re-seller.

I still create my own websites and yes I use JPEGs sometimes,
but the difference in loading with GIFs is amazing if you use a lot
      of graphics.

Try this Speed checker tool. There are a whole lot of other tools there also.
This not an Affiliate link. Its just Free to anyone.

CloudFlare does have some other tips about dealing with a spike in traffic that you may want to look at. Using PageRules, for example, to extend caching can probably help lighten more of that load.

One variable of consideration you might make (if you're driving traffic to a wordpress blog) is to migrate whatever content they're promoting to a raw .html file.

Might it be a tad whack?

Well yeah. But it will significantly lessen the load on your server if traffic is slamming into a raw .html document.

    :]

    Just something to consider.

PS: Cloudflare is a good backup resolution even IF you're hitting an .html doc.

You need a CDN service and some type of caching. Then you'll be perfectly fine with any size spike granted your hatchling plan doesn't exceed it's limits.

Check out MaxCDN + Total Cache Plugin. W3 Total Cache + MaxCDN » MaxCDN Blog
