Does anybody know good software for making an ebook?

Im really wanting to make my own ebook on the mobile industry because i really love that niche! I want to make my own Ebook but don't know where to go to achieve that...what are some good software or do you even need anything?

    It feels like you're using Microshaft Word, but you can Print to PDF and even include a password protection. Did I mention it's free?

    Hi,

    I read a post about a software called Scrivener which seems to be great for writing eBooks. I never used the program myself but I know people who have used it and they said it really helps to write eBooks quickly.

    Of course, it is not free, but it could save you a lot of time and money in the long run.

    I write eBooks for several clients, and I use MS Word, and there's a way for you to edit it so that it's Kindle-compatible. MS Word can easily be converted to PDF, which is the usual eBook platform, so you don't have to purchase a software or anything....

    If you are looking for a software to generate the eBook....that's another story, a non-existing one I believe.

    Pages should save to PDF format, though I understand it is not as clean a conversion as MS Word. Make sure you review it.

    A better option might be the Mac version of Open Office. You can find it here:

    I write my ebooks up in Microsoft Word, and then have them converted into PDF format from: pdfonline .com.

    MS Word *definitely* can convert to PDF.

    However, when we're talking ebook you certainly want to do more than delivering a stinking PDF, we're talking Kindle and similiar etc. where an ebook is either in .MOBI or .EPUB

    PDF is a horrible format for many reasons....

    To make it a "real" ebook you will have to use software that can make a proper .epub or .mobi format, CALIBRE can convert, Abby Finereader is also great to convert, Adobe Acrobat also.

    Of course when you publish to Kindle they also do an auto-convert when you upload your MS Word .DOC or .PDF.... the issue is just that converting into Kindle/Mobi/Ebook rarely automatically goes perfect.

    For writing itself I use without exception MS Word 2010, even for "articles" or whatever other content. One reason is that for example the grammar/syntax check in MS Word is better than many paid services like Grammarly etc.

    Always have used either MS Word or Open Office - then converted to different formats from there. I have templates that we use now where margins, headers, TOC, chapter headings, etc...are all pre-designed to look more professional.

    Quick comment on your intended market - I'm sure you have dug a little deeper to investigate potential topics, but your comment "write an book on the mobile industry" reminds of several people we have worked with who initially started to write about something very general like an industry when the most demand will come from a much more finely tuned problem area such as "How to accept payments via mobile devices" or "Best way to secure your kids mobile phone and apps..."

    Hope you see what I mean -- you want topics backed by desire, urgency and passion, that way you have to work a great deal less to make sales.

    MS word allows you to convert to PDF but it does not allow you to have a clickable TOC, and it also has an annoying "upgrade" ad on it.

    Use open office for converting to PDF.

    Also, as stated above use calibre for converting to other file types.

      Teravel you are incorrect - MS Word versions after 2010 can save .doc files as .pdf, and there is a plugin to accomplish this in the 2007 version.

      I frequently, as others have mentioned here, build Word docs and save them as PDFs.

    I always use Microsoft Word to convert to PDF. However, having worked for big companies in the mobile industry, it is quite saturated! Do your research right, I hope you have found yourself an easy niche! Good luck with your endeavors.

    Ya all you need is open office. If you are going to publish on Kindle you will need a cover and a way to format it properly as well. Really it depends what you are going to do with it...

    Microsoft office is the best these days.

    Office 365 has some really sexy templates, and converts easily into .pdf.

    If you have a little money to spend, you might consider hiring a professional writer to write an ebook for you, using your own research and notes. The research work you've done will most likely decrease the cost of the finished ebook. You can easily get this job done for as little as $50 on a gig type site.

    I write all my eBooks in Word. I convert them to a .mobi using an inexpensive formatting tool.
