Amazon Affiliates Question?

Is the commission really 4% when you start out as an Amazon Affiliate?

How do you guys make money as an affiliate, do you sell products that are $100 or more?

I am new to Amazon but feel like it would be hard to make money with the commissions being so low

Its low, but everyone trusts amazon. plus you can get higher commisions for selling in greater volumes.

A good strategy is to have a site selling lots of low priced items that gets you on the higher commision bracket, and you get more profit from your other site that sells higher priced items.

    Best regards

4% is the low end. It can climb as high as 8% based on sales volume. If you know what you are doing, you can target people who are late in the buying cycle when promoting Amazon products. By doing so, your conversion rates can often be quite high, resulting in very good commissions - even with the perceived low commission rates.

The more items you promote, the more affiliate commission % you get... the traffic you send is cookied too... so people that you promote a $5 calender to could buy any number of things and you get credit for those sales.

I never was much into promoting Amazon products until I started using fan pages in my plan. I have over 15 pages that are rocking and reach over 1 million fans a day. A simple niche specific amazon product promo brings in a good amount of cookies every few days, plus it gives me the opportunity to continue to sell through my list for the higher commission items elsewhere.

I had a lot of success on one of my sites (until it was penalized) with Amazon. As long as you're displaying the links properly and your site receives enough traffic, you should be good to go. I never made a killing, but extra change when I invested little in the site. I'm sure if I had dedicated more time and chose a niche with pricier products, I would have done a lot better.

The interesting thing about Amazon is that your earning per cent age goes up the more items you sell.
And this does not matter if they are low cost or high cost items.

The more you sell, the more you make.

FYI: Amazon, will not allow you to buy items from your own affiliate link so be careful about that one.

But if you do buy from Amazon, you can easily buy through another affiliate's link and it won't cost you a penny more to do so...so think about that the next time you order something from Amazon.

In the interest of educating others, NBSEO, could you explain how not to get penalized?

I think of the commission as 8% or 8.5%, not 4%, because I rarely ever sell at a volume that gets me 4%.

I target products in the $15-$30 range. That's what my traffic likes to buy. And it adds up quickly if you have a lot of traffic that you can sell to daily.

If you're focusing on big ticket items, you're going to have a rough time, especially since the cookie only lasts 24 hours (people don't impulse buy TVs).

Yeah I figured this would work good if you had a decent sized list with a lot of hungry buyers. I can see how it would add up, I was just surprised how low they start you at % wise.

It is against Amazon's TOS to put affiliate links in email or other media, although you can have links to an intermediary page ie presell/review site. For example, nearly all of my Amazon sales are the result of marketing to my affiliate sites from email or offline promotions such as telemarketing, SMS, direct mail, product webinars, live seminars, and direct sales (for high ticket items).

Most people trust Amazon and need less encouragement to buy than a digital product. Also you get paid for anything they buy as well as the product they clicked through on, even if they don't buy it. This all helps to increase volume and often offsets the low commission %.
