Adding pluggins to a WP blog on the hosting account?

Hi warriors,

I probabaly didn't even get the question right cos I am so confused

Please could someone give me some advice here...

I have added a blog to my domain using fantastico with hostgator and that's all fine. The only problem now is that I am trying to add pluggins as they only give you the basics to start with.

I tried just downloading and activating using the pluggins provided on wordpress but I am having problems as it keeps saying there is a fatal error or it says it has activated but nothing shows up?? Do you have to do something else such as manual uploading of the pluggins onto a directory or should it just be fine just to add pluggins direct from WP.

I am trying to add the wp-o-matic in particular but it says you need to have Simple Piecore or something? nothing is ever straightforward

My other question is, how does this blog connect to my actual website domain that it has been added to on fantastico. Do I just use the anchor text links on my blog or is there some other connection.

Sorry for the complete noob question and thanks in advance.

    Hi,

There are two ways to upload plugins in Wordpress. The first is to manually upload them - and you can use the File Manager in Cpanel on Hostgator for that. Naivigate your way to the wpcontent folder, then the plugins folder and upload them there.

Alternatively the latest version of Wordpress will let you upload plugins directly in your admin control panel.

As for fatal errors etc. appreciate that as new versions of Wordpress are brought out, the plugins also need ot be updated to accommodate the code changes. Sometimes if you are using a plugin that doesn't support a certain version of Wordpress they may not not show up.

    Does this make sense?

    All the best,
    Richard

    Hi Richard,

Thankyou for your help. Yes I'm pretty sure I understand what you are saying. I'll go and have a go using the file manager in the Cpanel

    Hi BethSuzi,

As Richard says there are a couple of ways to get the plugins uploaded. But if you get stuck PM me and I'll walk you through it on Skype.

Thanks Nigel, very kind of you, unfortunately I don't have skype .

I think I should be fine using the cpanel but just one question, lol, where do I find the wpcontent folder? I click on file manager and then I am presented with
    • Home Directory
    • Web Root (public_html/www)
    • Public FTP Root (public_ftp)
    • Document Root for:
    Which one do I choose?

    Thankyou.

    {edit} I've found it sorry

      Hi Beth,

Look inside Web Root (public_html/www) or Public FTP Root (public_ftp). I am assuming that you installed your WordPress blog in the main directory and your blog url is http://www.yourdomainname.com.

Use an FTP client such as FileZilla, log into your domain name, and explore the following folder.

      http://www.yourdomainname.com/wp-content/plugins

Upload your plugins (pls unzip them first) into that folder.

Go into Wordpress, click "Plugins" and activate them there.

If the plugins are giving you error messages, delete them once again within your CPanel's file manager or do it directly via your FTP client.

When uploading the plugins, always read the installation instructions of each plugin first.

    Thanks Davion,

I'll keep this in mind, that's a great help if I or anyone else reading this thread, is going to use a FTP client.

Go to your public html file and in there you will see a folder called wp-content, inside that there is a folder called plugins open that up so you can upload wp-omatic and simple pie. Unzip the plugins ready to ftp. Both of these plugins are nested ie there is an outer folder and another folder inside that contains the plugin. You usually need to make sure that you upload the inner plugin folder.

    All the best
