I'm so scared now :(. Paypal called me, was that a fraud? Please help.

He guys,
I’m from India and today I received a call from +862128913333 at 1PM according to my country’s timing. I picked it up and a guy with American accent said that he is from PayPal. I thought that it was some kind of verification process and said yes.

He told me that this call will be recorded and told me my full name and asked me if I’m the person who is talking. I replied yes, and then he said he is calling to verify my withdrawal confirmation from PayPal to my bank account and want to check whether it is me or not. I thought he knew my full name and phone number so it’s not some kind of fraud call and actually from PayPal.

He asked me to tell the Gmail (PayPal) address. I told him the Gmail address. Then he asked me from where I’m I receiving this money, I replied that I’m receiving this from Fiverr.com. Then he asked me that what service I provide on Fiverr. And I replied that I provide writing service. He then said ok sir, your account is verified and thanks and cut the call.
A few minutes later I Googled the number and found that it’s a fraud number from china. I’m really scared now.
Did I get scammed?
How he got to know my name and number details?
What do I do now?

    At First login to your PayPal account and check that everything is right. If everything is ok then report it to PayPal and told them everything. I hope they will help you.

      I immediately logged into my Paypal and changed the password. After that I called local Paypal customer care and told them everything and they said that they can't tell anything about it

    Here's what to do.

    First, if anyone ever calls you, NEVER give them information.

    Say "for security purposes I'm going to call Paypal directly". Or whatever service is in question.

    If it was a scammer, he was after your email account; so login to Paypal and CHANGE the email account that's attached to it.

    Next, call Paypal and ask them if the number is legit.

    Finally, run a thorough scan on your system to see if you're backdoor'd / Trojan'd.

    Hopefully everything is legit, but always assume the worst.

    PS: Scan with Housecall and Eset.

    PPS: Did you try giving Paypal the phone number? I would ask if they can verify the integrity of the telephone number, and if they aren't sure, ask to elevate the issue.

      I called my local Paypal CC from the website and told them everything, nut they said that they don't know anything about it and my system is clean and no trojan or anything at all.

    When something like this happens, and you are not sure who is on the line, tell them " I am going to hang up now, and call Paypal myself and find out what is the issue "

    NEVER give your info over the phone if you have the slightest doubt. Call the company yourself and find out what the problem is. Paypal gives you pin before you call and they ask for it, before you talk to them, so you know you're talking to them....

    Also, they send you an email or survey after you talked to them.

        The worse that can happen is identity theft. You just have to protect yourself more from now on.

        I called the sheriffs office last week to report an abandoned car in a corn field, and he sounded weird, and was laughing. He asked me for my name, and I said " wait a minute, why are you laughing? Did I dial the wrong number? is this some clown playing pranks? " Of course he was a real sheriff, but I got suspicious and started asking him the questions.

        It doesn't matter who is calling, or who you call, make sure you are talking to the right people before you give out any personal info. The worse that can happen is them hanging up on you.

          That is so correct. I called and informed Paypal again. They said if anything unauthorized happen, they'll take responsibilities of it. I'm actually scared of that, how they knew my info?

            All it takes is a few minutes in your email account, and they can find all the info they need.

            Take a Screen shot of your Pay-pal account.....for your personal records!
            Its a record of what your account is of today.

            Days from now...if you believe that things are not right...You have a print out (screen-shot) to go back and refer too.

    Hopefully now you have changed everything you will be fine. I would guess they are relying on you not even imagining that they are a scam.

    Next time, you will do it all differently, so hopefully you can just call this a learning experience.

    Best thing to do is put it behind you and carry on. They may phone again, since they know your name and phone number, but you will be prepared.

    Ya that's a tough situation. Just keep an eye on your accounts and change your passwords to paypal and email. I'm assuming you already did that, right?

    So ya just keep an eye out and don't answer anyones questions again without verifying who they are. Paypal has no reason to call you for a transfer. Unless they freeze your account, they probably won't call you, and even if they do freeze your account they probably won't even call you.

    I would always expect PayPal to email with a problem before they would call.

    I'm quite sure this wasn't PayPal but a scam. Change your PayPal account and anything else in which you use the same password with.
