Amazon vs Brand Owner/Manufacturer

Has anybody affiliated through a products brand owner/manufacturer rather than amazon (not clickbank type sites). Lets say you had a niche site affiliating barbeques, instead of doing it through amazon why not contact each brand of barbeque you review's brand owned website and ask if they offer affiliating.

People would trust the official brands website and I am assuming commissions would be way better than 4-8%.

Downside is amazon can sometime have better prices

Anyway which one would you make more off if both were possible?

You could probably find the brands on CJ if you wanted to work with them directly but I would prefer to use Amazon because that's the place people are more likely to want to buy from.

The prices may be cheaper on Amazon for some reason and you could end up selling more than you expected.

What Amazon has that single manufacturers don't have is reach.

With the low commissions at Amazon, you're getting paid as the third person in line - product manufacturer, then Amazon, then the affiliate.

With a product manufacturer, you're getting paid a higher commission as the second person in line - product manufacturer, then the affiliate.

So which is more profitable for you - Amazon's reach and promotion or a higher commission direct from the manufacturer?

There's one sure way to find out. Test both approaches, track results, and over time you will have your question answered.

Just like most phases of Internet marketing, it takes work. And most IMers won't do it. How about you?
