Marketing a CV writing service

Hello everyone, could do with some advise on marketing my CV writing service.

I think I've got a pretty good website, but because the market it quite saturated I don't think SEO is going to be an option.

I've had 2 sales over 2 weeks, although that is with virtually no marketing.

I've seen from similar writing services that my best bet would be craigslist. I have posted about 4 ads on various areas of the site but have got almost no visitors.

I have also done some paid facebook advertising but this didn't lead to any sales.

I'm planning on putting posters up in student halls, universities and possibly job centres, but would this be enough?

I know there are people on this site who have made money from doing something similar, so it would be great to know how you marketed it effectively.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers.

    Dan,

I don't think you're going to get much quality advice from successful people here who are your direct competitors!

When you do advertising and promotion for a new business or service it certainly takes awhile to get traction (the ball rolling).

The first thing I would evaluate, given your current situation, is this ...

How compelling is your offer? Why would anyone choose you over the rest of the alternatives in your niche?

If you can't answer that question, then how can you expect to rise above the competition?

You have to make a very compelling case for why your service is the logical choice for someone looking to hire your service.

Of course there are lots of reasons why a business doesn't get sales - but the very first thing you should evaluate is your position in the market and how you can stand above the competition to get noticed and hired.

    The very best to you.

Well I'm intending for my service to be quite localised and targeted (one demographic, one city) so there shouldn't actually be that many competitors

In regards to your other comments, my selling point in the price, much lower than any online competitors. I supposed to I just need to build trust.

Adwords. Very targeted, but you might need to change your low price leader strategy.

For a CV, price point is NOT the main appeal.
Why should people choose YOU instead of other, cheaper options.

I ask this as I also offer such a service and I am not the cheapest or the most expensive. I am qualified to do it. You need to prove you can give them something others can't.

    Thanks for all the responses.

I'm targeting London students as my demographic - as students aren't known or their massive wealth I think a low price range will be attractive, especially as they will only be looking for part time work.

Here is a poster I quickly rustled up - what do you think? Too many words perhaps?

Your now-deleted post had absolutely nothing to do with what's being discussed in this thread, which is about marketing the service. Your post was purely a spammy way for you to promote your own signature-file. Go away and spam someone else's forum instead, because you won't last long here, if that's your plan.

No; I don't think that at all.

But I think your price is far too low for the majority of your potential customers to be willing to take it very seriously. (I speak as a recent university graduate in the UK, myself, who has helped several people do their CV's, so I "know the market" to some extent. I think you'll probably attract more customers at 4 or 5 times the price, and possibly even at 10 times the price.)

        OP,

What's happened to your travel website that you seemed so enamoured with a couple of weeks back and was so desperate to promote? Now you're looking to earn small-change with a few CV's here and there.

Seems your problem is you can't concentrate on one thing at a time. Also - as I recall - you were given some fantastic advice from various Warriors (myself included), but evidently you've done nothing as you're back on here asking more marketing questions.

You had a money-spinner with your travel website but ignored good advice and didn't want to spend money to get it right. Sad.

Why only target students? The wider your market, the more chances you have to help people.

Are you aware of the spelling errors on your poster and the rest of that page? Is it deliberate or accidental? If accidental, I suggest fixing it. If deliberate, it's not wise.

Have you considered creating a LinkedIn page and marketing through it?

Joining relevant professional groups or groups for those looking for work in your area could be a low/no cost way to market to your targeted demographics.

You could offer good CV tips, infographics, etc., to help "connect" with people and ultimately sell them your service.

You need to find a unique selling point for your service to stand out. It'd be a good idea to search for similar services on Fiverr and make some notes about what makes the highest-rated services stand out. Often it's quirky design options, or something about the gig creator that resonates with the buyer (authentic, relevant stories about your own experiences finding a job for example).

    Hope this helps.

Market offline. Print flyers and brochures and pay students to distribute them. Offer them a finder's fee if they get you clients. Take out small print classified ads in non-mainstream newspapers. Hold mini classes on how to create a CV, resume. You will get people that will hire you.

The ad text is tiny. A number of typos and the text is not that convincing. You need decisive words. In the ad you sound unsure of yourself. Good luck though.

Find your top competitors and REVERSE ENGINEER what they are doing. There are many free online tools you can use to do this. You can R/E their SEO strategy, their social media presence, and other marketing initiatives.
