Does a redirect have any content?

Hey just a really quick question.

If i have one domain with my sales page and articles etc, and then if i create another domain that just redirects to that, will the domain that has nothing on it come up in search results?

Dont know if that makes sense or not

Simply put, will a domain that only serves as a redirect have any natural search engine capabilities?

I am thinking it wont, but just curious as I am doing some backlinking and am wondering if it is pointless to backlink to that domain, which only redirects to my main site.

Thanks
Ashley

Depends how you do it. If you do a 302, usually not. If you do some (semi) fancy php scripting, then yes.

If the site that only performs redirects has no other content, then no. The only thing browsers and search engines will see is the redirect in the HTTP header. If you use 302 (temporary), the domain will most likely keep being visited by search engines. 301 (permanent) will eventually cause the crawlers to stop visiting the domain that's handling the redirects.

No. What's more, it's likely to result in your site ending up in Google's supplementary index. The supplementary index is a bit like being in jail.

Read this Google Webmaster page very carefully, especially the last section.

If you need to have the other domain online for some reason, make sure you use a 301 redirect. This won't get the domain listed in Google, but it will keep you out of the supplementary index.

    The answer is no.

A redirect url will convert all it's existing link juice including google love to the redirected url. That's 1 of the reason why domain flipping is hot, people buy those old domain and use a 301 redirect to pass down all the google loves back to their website.

So your saying I should go set it to 301? will i be able to change it later and have it not redirect to the other domain?

So you are saying if i buy a domain with keywords in it that are related to my niche, i will "absorb" some of its "googleness" ?(sorry dont know how else to put it!)

Is it really worth doing? Do alot of people do it? If you did do it would you set it to 301 or 302?

Thanks again for all your help, I am actually planning on creating content for that other site, but was curious as to how the search engines treated it.
