selling ad space on site for $

4 replies
hey all,

i have a high traffic (25k hits per month) that i want to start selling ad space on to companies selling physical products in the same very targeted niche.

how should i go about figuring out what to charge people for banners either site wide or on certain pages?

the niche i am in is food related, highly targeted and products likely to be advertised would be in the $3-$8 range.

i know i dominate a large part of the niche in traffic terms and i would be planning on selling ad space to mom & pop type outfits.

any ideas how much i should charge?

    Try text-link-ads.com or adbrite.com. Check for similar websites and see how much they charge.

      thanks for the response. i assume the two are similar to adsense right? i am already running adsense and making a certain amount each month. I just thought i should try and up the revenue by selling some banners and if i sell direct i could get a steady monthly income right?

      as i am the big traffic player and the niche is so small there are no other sites offering direct ads so I have no benchmarks out there.

    It's similar to adsense in a way but it is a monthly advertising. So you can view how much they are paying. Also there is a site like projectwonderful.com that you can post your site and wait for possible advertisers using different banner ad format. You don't need to participate. You'll just check how much they are charging in the niche you are into. Unless you like it. It's just a benchmark, you can charge more if you like.

    Here's my thoughts;

    1. Go to google and type in some food related search string like "Food Forums". This may bring up some specific food related online forums in which you can network with your target audience directly.
    2. Use online directories or go to google and type in "Food manufactuers", "Food companies" "Food retailers" "Family Food establishments" "home delivery food" or other searches in your target niche.

    3. Now that you have a list of companies you can start contacting them one by one.

    4. Devise an standard mailshot email to send to each company which provides an overview of your business and specifically why advertising on your site would provide them with a targeted stream of visitor traffic.
