Possible to build a list through Facebook?

Hey just wondering if anyone's had success with this method of list building or if they think it may work.
Say I had a fan page, created a sponsored post saying 'sign up and get free report' then they are taken to the free download page.
Would this be a good technique? Of course the free product would be highly targeted to the people targeted in the ad.
