I'll spare you the back-story on this or else this would be a very long post, but just imagine for yourself all the time and money I wasted going after ideas and creating products I hadn't thoroughly or properly researched a market for.

So, here's my new mantra - I hope this helps someone:

"Give People What They Want, NOT What You Want Them To Want".

Yes, and I find blogging with researched long tail keywords is the absolutely best way on the planet to do that. Google is just amazing.

I couldn't agree more, there's nothing worse than trying to educate a market that they need your product.

I think it's Paul Myers that said, "Sell them what they want, give them what you sold them and sneak in what they need."

Amen, David, and it's even better if there are A LOT of people who want the solution you're offering...

I'll give you a tragic case in point - years ago I was doing volunteer work at a job center, teaching resume and interview skills.

People ate it up, loved it.

So I created an audio program - a product virgin, I spent a lot of time and money on the production - being an (ex)musician, the audio I did digitally for free but paid a producer friend a small amount to edit and mix in original music.

Then I spent a ton on a great graphic design.

Then I spent a ton on terrific packaging - replication, shrink wrap - totally pro.

At my first job fair, hundreds of people saw it, one person bought it.

I was floored - but it turns out job seekers don't like to spend money!

At another job fair, I experimented with dropping the price from $20 to $5, sold 61 of them.

The product is in the black now, and I actually do have an audio book publishing deal and still retail on Amazon, but I still have like 700 of these things in the spare bedroom taking up my girlfriend's valuable closet space.

Sure, I learned tons from start to finish, but I'm not sure I'd have done it all IF I KNEW that job seekers is just not the "lake full of hungry fish" I thought it would be.
