Large Niches - can they be tackled like this?

Good morning,

I was just wondering, can large niches such as weight loss or dieting for example - can they be tackled and can someone succeed if they concentrate on only a specific long tail keyword?

This should help them rank, but will it work?

I am a bit confused about whether you mean a big niche or a arrow niche.

At the start of the post you talk about a big niche.

However, at the end you talk about a long tail keyword.

To me a long tail keyword is something like 'how a over 50 year old man can lose weight in 2 months by cycling'.

So a long tail suggests a narrow niche.

Any niche can be split up into narrower niches and you should go for the narrower niches. Research first to see if it is profitable.

    This is what I mean:

    Big Niche: weight loss

Using the keyword: weight loss for 50 year old men

Will I be able to succeed by cutting the area down?

You will need to do research on the niche to see if it is profitable e.g. are people searching for it, how much competition is there for it, are people in the are willing to pay etc. There are a number of posts that can describe how to do it better than me.

If it turns out not to be profitable then cut the are down more and check them.

      For example:

weight loss for 50 year old men by walking
weight loss for 50 year old men by cycling
weight loss for 50 year old men before surgery
weight loss for 50 year old men in 2 months
weight loss for 50 year old men who have heart problems
weight loss for 50 year old men who are vegetarian
weight loss for 50 year old men who want to take up golf
      etc.

Then check each of these areas until you find an area that you can create a product / service for and would be profitable.

OK.. Here is how I look at things regarding this question.

First, in my book there are niches and their are subniches. To me, a niche is your example of "weight loss" and a sub niche would be "weight loss for senior citizens", or whatever. Follow me?

So, you can actually approach it from a few different perspectives. If you want to grind it out and get your site ranked for the major niche of "weight loss" you can go that route. It may take longer to get your main page ranked, but don't forget about all those web 2.0 sites that the search engines love!

Or, you can go after the sub niches and rank much quicker. You are still competing in a lucrative niche like "weight loss", but your focusing on a smaller angle of the niche. That means less searches, but could mean higher conversions. Someone looking for "weight loss" could just be tire kickers. Someone looking for "weight loss for summer wedding" is in buying mode.

But, dont' rule out the possibility that you could also do both! One site to cover the main niche, minisites/landing pages to cover the subniches

Hope that helps. So, go make it rain!

I think that the best way to tackle a larger niche like "weight loss" is to start a weight loss blog and write articles in the smaller niches.

You write one article on "How to lose 20 pounds before May wedding" and "What is the best Alcohol beverage for keeping the weight" etc. Write one article each day that covers a small part of the larger niche. After a year you will have 365 articles in that niche, and you will start to see a lot of people visiting your site.

One important thing is to build good backlinks both to each of your articles as well as the main domain. You need to participate in your niche and get to know some of the other marketers, bloggers, heroes, celebrities, go-to guys, eBook authors, list owners, Youtube fanatics in your niche. Be a part of the community.

Build good profiles and articles where it is possible, be active in the forums, make your face known, and give people a reason to listen to you.

I have never done this myself, but I think it is the best way to get started. You do not neccessary need to rank for the tirm "weight loss" but you need a lot of people who want to lose weight to see your website, and to look at you as an authority. John Chow, Problogger, Garry Conn, Pot Pie Girl, Travis (Bum Marketer) and Chris Carpenter is nowhere to be seen when you look at the first page for "make money online" in the G. Still many of the people who are involved in the make money online niche know who they are.
