So I got my copy of DNS..

I got my copy of DNS and installed it.

A few problems I'm encountering with it, that are at most very annoying.

Sometimes when I say new paragraph..

It shows new-paragraph in the wee DNS strip but doesn't continue to make a new paragraph.

Also the same for some sentences, it shows them in the strip but doenst actually continue to produce them on page.

Anyone know how to overcome this silly fault?

Thanks.

I have not purchased DNS but I am considering it b/c I would like to cut back on the time it takes to write. Other than the few problems do you recommend it?

If I don't get these few problems solved.. No I do not recommend it.

If I do, yes I do, it's a great productivity booster.

I've found that DNS is a real resource hog. I had to upgrade my ram to 2G before it started running normally (same problems as you described). I also find that closing any non-necessary programs helps.

I'm on 1.5gb of ram, always have been, my computer rund just fine with this.

Maybe the problem is because of RAM but I can't really see how it would be as it only does this sometimes, and not always.

It sounds like you have enough RAM. I went from 500M to 2G. Another thing I did was get a USB microphone on Ebay. It is superior to the one they provide. I noticed that as soon as I started using it, the text appeared on the screen faster. I think that's because it didn't have to decipher what I was saying. Makes sense I guess, the clearer the words, the quicker it should type.

In your case, if it's not hearing your speech clearly enough, maybe it just stalls occasionally. When it does type, are you finding that it's fairly accurate? Before I got the new mic, it would, on occasion, fill in words and phrases that made no sense.

It recongises the sentences, shows them in the little DNS bar, but then doesn't actually print it onto my scree/page.

Very strange if you ask me..

No-one seems to have replied that they also had this problem.

              Hmmm

So even if you're just dictating speech and saying something into your microphone like "I am a member of the warrior forum and I like Internet marketing", that sentence does not get typed into your document?

Okay, first off what program are you having DNS transcribe to? Are you using the included DragonPad application? Microsoft Word? WordPad?... Other?

Whatever program you're using to have Dragon NaturallySpeaking transcribe into, make sure that application's window is the currently active window while you're speaking. Once you start working in a window other than the one you wish to transcribe to, it's not going to work.

I'm just trying to make sure that this is not what's happening, and if you've ensured that you're keeping the proper document's window active while talking, then there's got to be some other problem.

I think you all have missed my actual problem.

                  I say the words..

There is the little dragon bar appears on the page showing me what I have said..

It is then supposed to output this onto the page, or in the case of new-paragraph it is supposed to make a new paragraph.

Every now and then it just does nothing.

I can see the sentence it has picked up, sitting there in the little bar type thing, but it justs sticks there.

I then continue to resay the sentence and it overwrites whats in the little bar and outputs it.

It seems more of a glitch than anything and it's really starting to bug me.

I started using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 earlier this year. It's come a long way since I tried it out a few years ago.

There's a couple things you might want to try when troubleshooting the new paragraph problem that you've been having.

First thing you could look at is to make sure that you have Dragon NaturallySpeaking set up to run in Dictation Mode and not in Normal Mode

From the DragonBar click on the menu item titled "Words". From there, make sure that "Dictation Mode" is selected. If you have "Normal Mode" selected, Dragon won't recognize when you say "New-Paragraph". "Dictation Mode" will allow Dragon to recognize the words "New-Paragraph" as a formatting command.

Other than that, if that doesn't work, and assuming that you don't have an exotic accent that might make it hard for DNS to understand the your speech, all I can think of to recommend is that you train Dragon NaturallySpeaking some more.

I hope one of those things can solve your problem.

I don't think Dragon NaturallySpeaking is a resource hog. I'm running DNS on a virtualized instance of Windows XP that has only 384 MB of RAM and it runs smoothly. Of course I'm not running any other programs at the same time. You may want to see if you have another program or background process that's sucking up all your memory.

I highly recommend Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I often get writer's block when it comes time to sit down at my computer and type articles, but dictating articles makes it a breeze because talking seems to come more naturally to me than does typing.

One thing that I like about Dragon NaturallySpeaking is that I can bring my voice recorder along with me for a car ride to the store and while driving my car I can dictate an article in my recorder. Then, when I arrive home, I can load the recording into Dragon NaturallySpeaking, which will then transcribe the recording. And after some small edits, I've got a complete article ready to publish on the Internet.

I was a bit reluctant to try Dragon NaturallySpeaking because, for one, I tried it out before a few years ago and it just didn't work very well. Also I tried voice-recognition technology available in Windows Vista and I thought theirs was crappy. I assumed that Windows Vista had the most cutting-edge speech recognition tools and that DNS couldn't be any better. But I was surprised to find that this Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 works with incredible accuracy and blows Windows speech recognition away.

Same here. When I started using Dragon NaturallySpeaking it would take a long time to transcribe what I said and just seemed to have a lot of lag. But when I upgraded my microphone to better one (nothing real expensive. I paid $10 at WalMart) and I adjusted my sound levels, I noticed a significant improvement in how fast and accurate DNS could transcribe my voice.

Once again, make sure to put Dragon NaturallySpeaking through a thorough training so it can understand your language patterns and qualities of your speech. It's kind of boring to read the training essays but it's really worth it. Dragon works really well out of the box but training makes it much better. Also, don't forget that you can let Dragon NaturallySpeaking scan the documents on your computer so it can get a better understanding of the words you use and how you use them.

I've always used "new line, new line". Never tried the "new paragraph" statement.
Sometimes I also keep one hand on the keyboard for quick "enter" hits.

How long did you train the software? Have you tried saying it at different speeds? Maybe faster?

I was involved in some early testing of dragon over a decade ago. I've since lost track of it, but nice to hear it still has some applications.

I've been using mine for about a year now so I don't clearly remember the beginning, but my guess would be either resource issues or microphone issues.

I'd try going through the microphone setup again and make sure it's positioned properly, plugged in properly, etc (one morning I was frustrated that none of my dictation was working right only to finally discover I had the mic plugged into the earphone jack)

I run it without too many problems on vista with one gig but it works much better when I plug in a USB drive I use as a ram drive. That gives it an extra virtual gig or just under I think.
