Experienced Warriors, plz criticize my Conv. Rate (4% of subscribers became buyers)

Hey guys,

As I'm going through my 2013 numbers, I see that....

the number of buyers (that subscribed before they bought)
= 4% x the number of total subscribers.

Some people buy my book right away; but these 4% subscribed to the newsletter, then bought the product. Which means that this is a critique of my newsletter conversion rate; and not overall conversion rate.

What do you think? Is this good? Average?

PS: the product is a book in the self improvement niche.

THANKS A MILLION

4% is a little short of what I'd expect from a warm lead but in the self-improvement niche you probably won't ever find yourself north of 15% so I would consider 4% very solid with some definite room for improvement. I would also make sure you are getting your customers that do buy to buy again in the future - while you might have less conversions then ones that you make are typically long term.

Sight unseen I would recommend sharpening your focus after subscription and really push for the sale. They've already made the commitment of time so you should be able to close them with either solid content or great pacing - you can either make the free content so good that they can't help but buy or you can lead them so deep into your free content that they would feel lost if they didn't get it finish it buy purchasing your book.

In my opinion 4% can be both good and bad!

If the leads are being bought (solo ads, fb ads, adsense, etc...) you want
to be breaking even so you won't drain your pockets while building a solid
buyers list, so if you're "losing" money each time you make a sale I would
    make some changes!

    But,
If these leads are from swaps, seo or any other free traffic source I would
be glad because each time I'm making a sale I'm making money and building
a free buyers list! Then I would dry to increase the leads and split test!

It's quite astonishing how small changes like font type, font color, font size,
background color, images, buttons, etc... can improve your % !!

Keep up the good work and happy holidays!

    That's way to little data.

100 people subscribed, 4 bought a $10,000 product or service: excellent.

    100 people subscribed, 4 bought a $5 product: awful.

4 percent isn't bad, man. Don't believe these people that claim wild 50% conversion rates.

With that said, you might be able to improve. But without seeing what you are actually doing, it's not really possible to suggest any changes.

    Thanks for the answers, guys!

This traffic comes from FREE sources like content marketing and SEO. The product is 35$.
So, for every 100 subs, I'm making ~120$.

I guess this is basically a critique of the quality of leads I bring, and the sales funnel I apply to them.

How many subs are you getting per day?
Really depends on the volume now, if it's high your getting a good payday
if it's only a one sale per day thing you should try to ether improve your
sales funnel or get more leads... or if you are brave do both

If people have the option of buying before subscribing, then your profit per visitor, not subscriber, is more important. So what is your profit per 100 or 1000 visitors?

Well, it's very low; it's 0.34%. 3.4 visitors per 1000, buy the product, without signing up for the newsletter.

By the way, 91% of the traffic doesn't signup or buy, they just walk away.

I think this is a pretty decent conversion level since these are people
who DID NOT BUY ON FIRST CONTACT. This means that you
would have lost these sales if you didn't have a follow-up process
in order--your newsletter. So I would take these sales as 'bonus'
    sales.

Yes, multiple exposure and relationship building will result in some more sales but, sadly, there are an number of things that limit peoples results:

      1) Most can't write decent followup emails.

      2) Most of the traffic sources they have gained subscribers from are low quality and the subscribers are dead in the water from day one.

      3) Email open rates continue to lower as more and more emails get caught in spam traps, and, if they make it into a Inbox, are lost in the gazillion of others there and just get lost or deleted.

One of the reasons my team is getting such high conversions to sale is through using sms text for subscriptions and automated followup. 99% of people read sms they get on their mobile devices immediately and respond readily.
