I think his trying to ask which one is better from social media and email marketing, and comparing both of them can be difficult but email marketing so far has been best for me.

For better engagement, i think email marketing is best. Directly You can enter into Visitors pocket using email marketing.

Lead gen, attention and eyeballs will increasingly come from social (Versus SEO for example) given the time spent and activity that is shifting from search to social.

Lead gen is still required though which brings you to lead capture, sales funnels etc...involving email marketing.

I agree with jbsmith that Social is beginning to drive more referral traffic. (Facebook v Google referral traffic - Business Insider)

You have to be careful lumping social into one though. Each Social platform has distinct characteristics that may enhance or undermine your ROI.

E.g. if you are an online retailer looking to acquire new customers then Facebook, Pinterest or instagram is great. Twitter wouldn't work so well.

I think email marketing is better for direct response marketing, no question, and so it shall be.

Social media is great though, because your end users definitely use it.

Use them both harmoniously in order to gain the utmost benefit.

    They complement one another, right?

Depends on your goals. Sales and conversions? Email.

Developing a relationship, brand awareness, interest/buzz, delivering your message to the public? Social.

That is, if you use each tool right, and don't become annoying - this is particularly bad on Facebook. It's inflating with MLM, lead magnets, and free offers without any relationship or qualifying first, and people are already ceasing to listen.

Email marketing is possibly the best sales model to use if you want sales online. I remember when Myspace was all the rave. Then it was Facebook (and still is). Now Instagram and Pinterest. The *tools* in the game will change, but the basic foundations of selling will always stay the same.

Both but you should approach them differently.
if you send people from social media and from your email list or someone email list to the same landing page then you're not gonna get the result that you want.
