How large should your sales video be?

My "VSL" right now is about 250mb, and runs for 25 min. This means: 10mb/minute.

Is this an OK size or must I make it smaller to not have it load too slowly?

That is WAY too heavy. You gotta optimize that video for online streaming.

you need to havbe a short, interesting and sweet sales video! most people click away when it's too boring, too long or too much time...

25 min is a huge one. I think you should make it shorter to 6-8 minutes.

Shorter the video to the point, more effective it will be. I always close the long videos and specially when the seller is trying to tell me how expensive holidays he is taking and how expensive cars he is driving around Coz such sort of stuff cannot impress the viewers unless each and evrything said in the video is upto the point.
The more video is to the point, the more belief people will have in your product, thus increasing your sales ratio.

Over the course of years I have seen Clickbank "blockbusters" that had sales videos as long as 30+ minutes and the site didn't load slow at all!

I have found that sales videos need to be around the 8 min mark any more then that you start getting drop off's. And no less then 5 min.

Where the heck are you getting your data?

        Because you're wrong.

Making blanket statements like that - without backing it up with specific examples is just exposing how little y'all have done your research.

        sorry.

Never mind how long the video is. The length of the video has nothing to do with how fast the page loads. A video can be 5 min long and be 200mb, that video is going to be a hell of a lot slower to load than a 20 min video which is 400mb.

All I'm after is the optimal kbit/sec that won't lag.

The only way to really know how quickly your video will load is to test it on whatever hosting platform you're planning to use. Of course, it will vary depending upon your viewer's location.

Where and how you host the video will be the determining factor of how quickly the video loads.

As for the length of the VSL, if it converts well that's all that matters. Everyone is going to have their opinion about the "right" length, however, the only thing metric that has any significance is your EPC.

Optimize the file using handbrake and see how low you can get it. If there is not much detail in the video then often it is good to lower the quality a little to save some space and make the video load faster. But if you're using a service such as Amazon S3 to host the video then it should be relatively quick anyway.

It's not how large your video should be
but how informative it is. A 7 minutes
well inform video is way better than
    17 minutes boring video.

Bandwidth is expensive. I have found that I can crush the video and save space. Also, 720p uses a lot less gigs. Shoot in 1080p and down size to 720 to get the best quality for your mini movie. Here is a tip to save space. Place photos in your video as static images go easy on memory.

In my opinion it really depends on the product.

It makes sense to have longer sales videos for more expensive products, and shorter for cheaper ones. The reason is that for a more expensive product, customers will be ready to watch more of your video to see all the features they'll be getting.

Bottom line is that you can't know for sure what will work best for your product, so the ultimate option is to split test between 2 or 3 videos with different length.

    Good luck,
    yoangov
