Moving up in google rankings

How hard is it to really move your site up in ranking on google, especially once you're on the first page. Is there any ballpark figure as to how many backlinks you need, or does that really depend on the quality of the links?

My blog is on the first page of google for a decent sized niche, but it's the very last result so obviously I'm not getting any traffic from it. I'm just wondering how much work it's gonna take to move up to one of the # 1 - 3 spots now that I'm on the first page.

It depends on the strength of the pages above you. How many links do they have? What quality are the links? How strong is the domain they are on? Once you determine that you will have an idea of what you have to do to beat them.

Study the sites above you. You can get a lot of information, even from free Firefox plugins like SEO for Firefox. Figure out their strengths and emulate them.

The only factor you can't control is age - but that can be overcome with link popularity and relevance!

Well SEO isn't really my thing but it has more to do with your competition. You need to understand them and what they've done to achieve the rankings they have before you can make an educated guess on how long it will take for you to achieve 1 through 3 rankings...

Start doing some research on who has those top positions first... Download SEO for Firefox - Competitive research tool - It's FREE and then watch the videos on how to use it... Free SEO Tools & Search Engine Optimization Software

    Good luck...

It depends entirely on what phrase you're targeting and how entrenched the competition is.

I have a site with over 1.5 million organic backlinks (it has over 20,000 users and is over 4 years old), and it can't pass the 4th or 5th spot for some keywords because the other sites are a few years older and have even more millions of links.

There are other keywords where you'd outrank everyone with a single strong link.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I just installed SEO for Firefox. Gotta say, pretty sweet program. Pretty much exactly what I needed, lol.

Old domains ranks well maybe because they have regular visitors and good backlinks.
I don't know if the keyword density is really matter but check also that.

List down all sites above you and check their PageRank, number of backlinks, number of outside links, keyword positioning in the content, use of meta-tags, dmoz listed (y/n), quality of links, alexa rank, etc.

Why it is needed? Maybe they get more keywords than your site and even you outweigh them in most of the above qualifications they outweigh you on other keyword related to your niche....AUTHORITY!

In addition to the great advice already offered...I think you should take into account the authority of the home page for the sites above you.

Example: the keyword your trying to rank for is "blue bananas." The url of the #1 position is bananas.com/blue bananas/, and if you check the links for that url you find it only has a couple links but, the bananas.com site might have a ton, with a good dose of pr to go with it.

Just a thought. I don't always go that deep when checking competition but if I've got the bit between my teeth about a keyword that I want to really rank well for...that's one of the things I'll do

    Cheers!
